HIGHLIGHTS
This week saw the second half of the Year 7 concerts, once again a lovely occasion with great singing from the tutor groups involved. The atmosphere during both concerts was amazing. Thank you to all who supported the events.
The live draw for the quarter-finals of the National Cup took place on Monday, the event was streamed live on YouTube. We have yet another away fixture, this time against Bonus Pastor Catholic College in Lewisham. Good luck to the team in the fixture after half term.
Congratulations to the Science Department who have two teams in the Final of the SATRO Problem Solving Challenge. Both the Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 5 teams came first in a very strong field, well done to all the students who took part.
TURKEY-SYRIA EARTHQUAKE APPEAL
Today students wore mufti and made donations of £1 or more for the Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal. We would like to thank all those who have made a donation, your generosity has currently raised an amazing £3800 which will help those affected by the devastating earthquake earlier this week. If you would like to make a donation but have not had an opportunity to do so, payments can still be made via ParentPay.

STRIKE ACTION
There continues to be a national programme of strike action by the NEU. The following days will have an impact on the school: 2 March (the day set aside for the South East region), 15 and 16 March which are two national days. I will be writing to you after half -erm once I have a better understanding of the potential impact on the school.
CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH WEEK
This week it has been both Children's Mental Health Week and Safer Internet Day. Our students regularly talk about the impact that technology, particularly social media, has on their mental health. In line with this, National Online Safety, a service we subscribe to and are certified in as a school, have released a poster encouraging open discussions about our young people's online lives, which can be read here.
READING UPDATE
Year 7 students have been making fantastic progress in their D.E.A.R. time and using Accelerated Reader so far this year. We have been delighted to award certificates to our first 16 Word Millionaires, who have read and logged over a million words each. This year, students in Year 7 have recorded over 70,091,130 words read through Accelerated Reader – a fantastic achievement and testament to their hard work in both D.E.A.R. time and at home. Over 85% of Year 7 students have successfully passed an Accelerated Reader quiz. On average, students in Year 7 have made six months progress with their reading between September and January. Congratulations!
ESAA NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY QUALIFICATION
Joshua, Manisha, Ella, James and Morgan have all qualified to run for Berkshire at the English School's National Cross-Country Championship in Nottingham on 18 March as either a starter or reserve.
They qualified after 2 successful rounds at the County Championship and the Regional Championship. |Well done to all of the students and we look forward to hearing about the event in March.

NOTICES
WORLD BOOK DAY TOKEN FOR USE IN HALF TERM
As every year since the inception of World Book Day (WBD) over 25 years ago, students will be given a WBD Token which can be used to purchase one of the WBD Books, or as a £1 contribution towards the cost of another book of their choice.
Moving with the times, this year's WBD token has gone 'digital' for secondary school students, and a token can be accessed here.
WBD tokens can be used from Thursday 16 February, so please consider allowing for an opportunity during half term to use this, to get in early and snap up a book while stocks are fresh on the shelves at participating retailers including Asda, Morrisons, Sainsburys, Tesco, The Works, Waterstones, WH Smith, Blackwell’s (selected stores only) and your local bookseller.
World Book Day falls on Thursday 2 March and we will be celebrating all week with assemblies that focus on the contribution that reading makes to wellbeing, both fiction and non-fiction, in all its various forms.
Meanwhile, regular reading for pleasure, apart from improving wellbeing, empathy skills and wider world awareness, is one of the best contributors to better performance in other subjects, as well as in English, also providing one of the most important predictors of test scores at 16, regardless of background. Check out the World Book Day Website https://www.worldbookday.com/about-us/the-evidence/ if you want to read more about the evidence that supports this.
There is always a vast array of books available to students in the Library and Mrs Olding has created a display of previous WBD books that can be borrowed in celebration of this year's World Book Day.
Students will also learn from the assemblies about activities and competitions running throughout the week from Monday 27 February, ending with the Staff Dress-Up that will provide a grand finale to the celebrations on Friday 3 March!

NATIONAL THANK A TEACHER DAY
The Thank a Teacher Campaign is run by The Teaching Awards Trust which was established to celebrate and recognise excellence in education.
Every year they celebrate schools and colleges across the UK on National Thank a Teacher Day 21 June 2023 but thank you cards can be sent to those special members of staff all year round.
Anyone can send a card; children, students, parents, grandparents and colleagues can all say thank you. The Thank a Teacher campaign recognises all staff working in schools; school leaders, teachers, teaching assistants, and all support staff such as lunchtime supervisors, caretakers and cleaners.
If you would like to show your gratitude to a particular member of our staff, you can do so by clicking here.
BOOK CLUB
Our third 'Staff and Sixth Form Book Club' meeting was another success. Lots of interesting and insightful discussions about Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi were had. The book was given an overall rating of 4.3 out of 5. A big thank you to Year 12 student, Libby who helped to run the session and all of our amazing attendees. All of the attendees nominated a recommendation for our next book, and one recommendation was picked out of a hat... If you would like to read along with staff and students, the book we are reading for our next meeting in April is:
