GCSE Geography Students Visit Southampton
Over the past couple of weeks, three groups of Year 10 GCSE Geography students have visited Southampton to understand the process of a geographical enquiry question - this is when you are required to create a question, conduct fieldwork to gather data which is then presented, analysed and evaluated before a conclusion is drawn. Students will be examined on this for their GCSE exam.
Amber summed up the trip :
Today we discovered and observed contrasting neighbourhoods in Southampton and how the environment affected quality of life. We started in Basset, where we completed a survey about quality of life - the local resident questioned enthused about her house and how much she liked living there. Next, we went to Redbridge, and we learnt about how a deprived area is being aided to develop and create a sense of community. We also visited West Quay shopping centre before finishing at Bevois as our last stop. Here we walked around to complete our different methods of primary data collection.
Charlie, Drina and Mia added "For our GCSE fieldwork we went to three wards in Southampton, Bassett, Bevois and Redbridge. We were investigating the quality of life and seeing geography in the field which meant we could analyse each place and collect primary data. People conducted questionnaires and we completed surveys based on observations. We can now use this primary data in school to understand and analyse how quality of life can vary."
Evie concluded "We observed lots of completely different places in Southampton that gave me a better perspective on how urban areas are split with different levels of investment in them. It was amazing to get the opportunity to speak to residents and see the areas firsthand".
