News round up (4)

This week has seen two major events in school, The Spring Concert and the Careers Fair.  It is always a joy to attend The Spring Concert.  The breadth of musical styles and the skills on display are wonderful to hear.  From the Foo Fighters to Schubert and everything in between.  The concert is the last one that the present Year 13 will perform in school.  We would like to thank them all for their commitment to their music, the support they have given younger students and all the wonderful performances they have given for so many to enjoy over their time with us.  We wish them all the best in their exams and the next stage of their education.

The annual Careers Fairs took place with over twenty companies and further education institutions represented - this is an opportunity for students to talk with employers and understand some of the opportunities that exist for them.  Thank you to all who supported the event as it forms a valuable part of our career education offer in school.

Free & Equal Ambassador training took place this week.  This is a scheme whereby twenty students have received training to help them be Ambassadors for Equality across the school.  There are some other training sessions planned to help students advocate for individuals in school as well as help our school community identify issues and deal with them quickly and effectively.  Thank you to the Free and Equal campaign for providing the training.

Over the last month, students have been working on their entries for the Show Racism the Red Card Competition. Through this competition, students creatively expressed anti-racist ideas using a range of media including artwork, poetry and music.

In total, we had over sixty entries in school with most students designing T-Shirts or football boots. The winning entries for the school were those with the most meaningful anti-racist messages. This competition provided an effective method of getting students to galvanise around anti- racist messaging and demonstrate unity, which is one of our core values at school.

This is particularly relevant this week as we celebrate International Day for the Eradication of Racial Discrimination today March 21. This day is supported by the United Nations to encourage people across the globe to stand up against racism in all its forms.

As a community we are committed to supporting this cause, not just today but every day so everyone in our immediate school community can feel a sense of belonging.

Congratulations to Theresa Year 10  - Winner in her category (Poetry) and Amare Year 7 - Winner in his category (Music).
