NEWSLETTER - 7th MARCH 2025

News round up (4)

Spring has certainly sprung this week, with daffodils and irises springing up around the school site.  When we have weather like this, it reinforces how lucky we are with the school site we have and how important it is for all of us to make sure that we keep it looking wonderful.

On Wednesday, 5th March, we held a presentation in school highlighting the impact of social media and AI on young people.   Reflecting after the evening on all of the different scenarios we have had to deal with as a school, I do hope that all those who attended found it useful, which is why we are increasingly concerned about the impact of devices on individuals and our whole school community and beyond.

The most important aspect of keeping your child safe is to talk to them about the use of social media and have an open discussion regarding the impact of them from headline-grabbing tragic causes to the impact on sleep and wellbeing daily.

The charity Smartphone Free Childhood is doing a lot of work on this.  The following link will take you to their resources page, from which you can explore the wider website.

STUDENTS TO ARSENAL AGAIN

Year 9 & Year 10 boys once again travelled to London Colney to act as students for the Arsenal Under 18 players to complete their coaching badges.  The boys and, dare I say, the staff had a great time.  Thank you to Arsenal Football for this wonderful opportunity.  We received a wonderful email from the club yesterday:

‘Thank you for your support with the session today. Your students were exemplary, as always, and consequently we would love to use them again for the final UEFA C session for this season if they are able to come.’

Well done to all the boys who attended.

PUSH ON PUNCTUALITY

A number of students have become very tardy with their punctuality to lessons.  As such, this is a focus of the school community.  Any student who is more than 5 minutes late to a lesson will have to work in a late room.  A text will be sent home to parents so they are aware that their child has not got to their lesson on time and a consequence will be assigned.  This focus is about students understanding the importance of punctuality and comes on the back of career-based assemblies this week that focused on soft skills that employers are looking for, such as turning up on time!

DRUGS DETECTION DOGS VISIT

Untitled design (8)

As many parents and carers will be aware, we periodically invite a company into school which specialises in drugs detection. This is primarily done as a preventative safeguarding measure and part of our proactive and robust approach against use of illegal substances.

On Wednesday this week we scheduled an unannounced visit, and we are delighted to report that there were zero indications over the day. We intend to maintain a high profile and zero-tolerance approach in the area and continue to focus on educating students on the dangers of illegal substances. This includes the uncertainty of what may be in vapes. We do appreciate the support that we have received from the school community regarding our actions here and thank you for delivering a consistent message at home.
