National Careers Week 2025

This week, students at Charters attended inspiring assemblies led by Mr. Stephenson, focusing on the importance of National Careers Week. Setting the tone with the lively and fitting tune of Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5, he welcomed students into the hall with a reminder that careers should be something to build, develop, and enjoy.
Once the hall settled into silence, Mr. Stephenson explored the difference between a job and a career. While a job may sound like hard work, a career offers progression and opportunities for growth. He emphasised that while students work hard to gain knowledge and skills in their academic subjects, it is the softer skills that will set them apart in the workplace.
Students were introduced to the top ten softer skills valued by employers:
- Confidence
- Time management
- Self-management
- Friendliness and manners
- Ambition
- Focus
- Common sense
- Situational awareness
- Enthusiasm and optimism
- Empathy
While strong grades open the door to interviews, it is these qualities that will ultimately help secure a position. This week’s assemblies focused on three of these key skills: time management, self-management, and friendliness & manners.
Punctuality is a key focus this term, and Mrs. Henly outlined the school's expectations regarding lateness. From next week, if a student is more than five minutes late to a lesson, they will be denied entry and supervised by a member of the Senior Leadership Team for the remainder of the lesson. Parents and carers will be notified via text should this occur.
Students were encouraged to take the lead in developing their skills through opportunities at Charters. Participating in group projects builds communication and problem-solving skills, while involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award fosters resilience and adaptability. Music, sports, and extracurricular clubs provide students with opportunities to develop confidence, teamwork, and discipline - all key qualities for future success.
Finally, students were reminded that simple acts of kindness and respect are crucial in any professional environment. Friendliness and good manners help forge positive relationships, enhance teamwork, and create a supportive atmosphere. Charters' core values of Unity, Respect, and Excellence serve as a guide for daily interactions, whether it’s picking up litter, holding doors open, or simply being kind to one another.
National Careers Week has been an excellent opportunity for students to reflect on the skills they need for the future. With a focus on personal development and a commitment to excellence, Charters students are well on their way to building bright and successful careers.
