Last week, 130 Year 10 GCSE Geography students immersed themselves in Human Geography fieldwork in Southampton over three days. Students visited the wards of Bassett and Bevois to investigate how the quality of life varies within Southampton. They used a range of primary data collection methods, including environmental quality surveys and questionnaires using ArcGIS Survey 123 to capture their data digitally.

This 'in the field' experience is a vital part of their GCSE, and students will be examined on their fieldwork in paper 2.

A big well done to all the students for their hard work and for representing the school fantastically throughout the day!

Students Asees and Eleanor have summed up the trip for us:

We arrived in Basset, we then walked around the local area to collect primary data on specific topics including environmental quality survey (EQS), crime prevention and word association. While we walked around, we observed the surroundings and took notes on things such as sounds, sights and smells. In addition to this we conducted questionnaires to local residents while they were out walking.

After we left Bassett, we drove across Southampton to West Quay Shopping Centre. Here we had lunch in the food court, there were many options available, and many students opted to have Macdonald’s!

Later, we drove to Bevois, here we walked to our location and filled out the same surveys we completed in Bassett. Here we observed the difference between the quality of life between two areas (Bassett and Bevois).

In our next lessons, we will be completing a write up where we will compile our results and compare the two areas to decide which area has a better quality of life. Overall, this will allow us to develop our knowledge of the contrast between different areas within the UK.
