HIGHLIGHTS
The Music department held their Spring concert on Wednesday Evening, it was magical to hear and see our students playing and singing so beautifully. It was a truly uplifting evening for the soul and mind. Well done and thank you to all of the 60 performers and staff who took part. The event was also used to hand out Music Colours to students in Year 12 and Year 11 as it will be their final performance before their exams. You can read more on our new School Colours awards in the News section below.
This week we hosted the regional SATRO Science Finals with 24 schools from all over the South East coming here to take part. Our Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 5 teams did very well indeed and thoroughly enjoyed the event. Well done to the two teams and thank you to Mrs Cook for organising.
The under 16 Girls Handball team are County Champions after winning 5-0 in the final against Maiden Erlegh School earlier in the week. The team played very well in the tournament showing great teamwork and determination to win all their games. Congratulations to the whole team and Miss Campling for her expert coaching.
Small things make a difference - while in the lunch queue earlier on in the week, I notice a boy leaving the queue and checked if all was okay, he replied 'yes all good I am just joining my friend in the queue as he is at the back'. A refreshing change to those young people who think they can join their friends at the front.
Students in Year 8 attended the Key Stage 3 Science Live show on Friday last week in London. The feedback was that it was an incredibly interesting day listening to world-renowned scientists talk about their areas of interest. Professor Robert Winston, who opened our STEM building, presented and took questions from the students about his specialist area of genetics.
We had exhibitors from all types of industry/university employers in school today coming to talk to our students at the annual Careers Fair. Each year group went into the Hall for this valuable experience of being able to talk to employees of firms in the local area, as well as at a national and international level. This is part of our commitment to providing all year groups with opportunities to speak to employers. We hope that the students made the most of the opportunity to explore possible career paths.
AUTISM AWARENESS WEEK 27 - 2 APRIL
Next week we are celebrating 'Autism Awareness Week'.
This will include each tutor group contributing to a display that recognises we are all walking side by side with those who are neurodivergent. This visual display echoes our school value of Unity and we hope will encourage our students to continue to promote kindness.
In tutor groups, students will also be watching a short video each morning which will aim to bust typical myths and stereotypes attached to Autism. We hope that our students find the videos educational and allow them to better sympathise with those in a wider community with Autism.
On Friday, we are asking all staff and students to wear a bright coloured accessory as part of the national campaign: 'Colour'. We are promoting the phrase: 'The Brighter the Better'. This could be a hair tie, a scarf, socks - anything that can be worn in addition to our usual school uniform. For each student that wears a bright item, a house point will be awarded.
If you'd like more information about Autism, we highly recommend starting here, at this website: https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/what-is-autism

NOTICES
SUMMER TERM
Students will finish at 1.00 pm on 31 March for the last day of the Spring term. School will reopen on Monday 17 April to students for the start of the Summer Term.
The optional Summer term uniform code will be in place. The Summer term uniform expectations can be found here. White Polo shirts can be worn by all students. Blazer must still be worn. Students will be told when they can take them off.
CHEWING GUM IN SCHOOL
Chewing gum is not permitted in school and students will receive detentions for chewing. We will be reminding students of this and would be grateful if you could support with a message at home.
CONTACTING SCHOOL
As you are aware we have a protocol regarding expectations around our responses to parents. These can be found here. I appreciate that there are sometimes when incidents happen and parents and carers want to speak to someone straight away. This is not always possible due to teaching commitments and work patterns. I would also like to point out that parents being verbally aggressive towards staff will not be tolerated and staff will end a phone call or a meeting if this happens. If abusive emails are sent they will not be responded to.
COMMUNITY AWARENESS
We have been made aware of a young female knocking on doors in the local area claiming that she is a student at Charters and is collecting money for charity. Due to a picture we have seen from a ring doorbell, we know that this is not a Charters student. We have passed the details we have on to the local police. If the person knocks on your door claiming that they 'are raising money and if they raise the most money they get a trip as a reward' this is not true. Please inform the Police through the 101 number.
REQUEST FROM THAMES VALLEY POLICE
We have had request from Thames Valley Police asking for witnesses to an incident that happened on Friday 10 March 2023 at 8:10am on Dry Arch Road. A member of the public has emailed the police with DashCam footage of students being deliberately soaked on their way to school. The police intend to charge the driver with careless driving based on what they can see, if they can identify the students. They need to know who was involved to be able to do that, it cannot happen based on a third party report. If anyone has any information regarding this incident, particularly if they were involved or saw the incident, please do get in touch with Mr Wright who will gather the information and pass it on to TVP. Thank you.
MOBILE PHONE EMERGENCY ALERT CHECK
Please be aware that on Sunday 23 April, the Government will be issuing a mobile phone emergency alert check. This means any mobiles which are on will be activated and sound an alarm.
Emergency Alerts is a UK government service that will warn you if there’s a danger to life nearby. In an emergency, your mobile phone or tablet will receive an alert with advice about how to stay safe. The government does not need to know your phone number or location to send you an alert.
Anyone experiencing domestic abuse who has a hidden phone for safety emergency reasons may be affected and perpetrators could be alerted to the presence of the secret phone if they are near the victim/secret phone when the alert goes off.
More information can be found on the government website: https://www.gov.uk/alerts
RUNNING FOR TEENAGE CANCER TRUST
Our Site Manager is training for the London Marathon which takes place on 23 April (Charters' 65th Birthday!) and he's still managing to run our school site brilliantly, despite his training schedule ramping up for the forthcoming 26.2 mile challenge!
Charters School is full of teenagers and as every day seven young people aged 13-24 in the UK hear the words “you have cancer”, Rob is running to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust .
Anyone who would like to support Rob can make a donation through his #JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/robert-brocklehurst101
It's not just our students who embody our values of #Unity #Respect #Excellence

FOOD BANK - EVERY TUESDAY
12:00-1:00PM
SHARE Hope Church, Sunningdale
High Street, Sunningdale, SL5 7LY (next to Nag’s Head Pub)
Hate food waste? Come along to Hope Church Sunningdale FOOD BANK, open to ANYONE. We have mainly fresh food and bakery items donated from local supermarkets. The food is at the end of its shelf life (but still perfectly fine to eat!) It would otherwise just go to waste. Bring a bag to fill up, stop for a chat and a cup of tea (and cake!!) and warm up in the church. ALL welcome, no voucher/referral required.
We operate a one (standard size) shopping bag per family policy and use ticketing system to stagger entrance to the food bank. We ask that you enter through the side door. Tea/coffee/biscuits are available from 11:15 and during the food bank. Entrance tickets will be distributed just before the food bank opens at 12:00. We may need to limit some items so there is enough to share with everyone.
