NEWSLETTER - 17 NOVEMBER

HIGHLIGHTS

Due to the weather, we were unable to have our normal Service of Remembrance on the Astro. One of our Year 9 students still played the Last Post in the blustery conditions, the sounds of which drifted across the school site.  We use this moment to reflect on all service personnel who have lost their life in conflict, in particular, we remember Ben Reddy a former student of Charters and a Royal Marine who was killed in Afghanistan in March 2007.  Our thoughts are with all service families who sacrifice a great deal to keep all safe in the United Kingdom.

On Wednesday Evening we hosted the DofE Presentation Evening, this evening celebrates the achievement of students at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.  The Main School Hall was full of students and families celebrating the successful completion of the award.  The audience listened to a speech from Libby in Year 13 about her experience with the Gold Award and the impact it has had on her.  Well done to all the students who have demonstrated resilience and motivation in completing the award.  The award is not just about the expedition but encompasses learning a new skill, volunteering and physical activity.    We are very pleased to have already enrolled the maximum number of students on to the Bronze and Gold programmes for 2023-2024. If any student in Year 10 would like to complete their Silver award, please contact Miss De’Ath using dofe@chartersschool.org.uk

CHARTERS CHARACTER                                Untitled design (35)

Next week will see our second Character Focus Week – Integrity.  At Charters we define Integrity as ‘We do the right thing even when no one is looking; we are honest and have strong moral principles.’

PDL and assemblies will obviously be slightly different for each year group but with Integrity as the overriding theme.

For those of you who would like to continue this discussion with your child at home a few conversation starters might be:

  • What does it mean to have strong moral principles?
  • Where do we learn our moral principles?
  • Are there be any repercussions (unintended consequences) if we are not demonstrating integrity?
  • How do you show integrity in your day to day life?
  • Does it affect those around you if you do not act with integrity?
  • Is being thought of as someone with integrity important to you? Why, or why not? How would you feel if someone accused you of not having integrity?

Below are links to videos that some year groups will be watching which may also be of interest to you and you make like to discuss with your child.

Nb Yr. 7 will be doing things slightly differently and thinking about Integrity during Tutor Time as they have a visiting theatre company in during PDL next week looking at Sexism and Misogyny.

CHRISTMAS WISH LISTSSIXTH FORM (4)

We are launching our 2023 Wish List today!

Each department has put together a list of Wishes that would help to enhance the curriculum and bring the syllabus alive for their students, and we would be so grateful if you could make some of their wishes come true.

Please take a look at the list and if you would like to grant a Wish for a department, please make a donation via CAF Donate, our secure online giving platform, where we can claim an additional 25% on your donation from the Government if you are a UK taxpayer and choose to tick the Gift Aid box. Once you have done this, please email our Marketing Team so that they can order your Wish and deliver to the department in the new year.

Last year, the generosity of our wider community raised £3551 to enhance the resources within departments. We appreciate that the cost of living is rising for everyone and more than ever we are grateful for every Wish that you grant.

Those who prefer to donate via ParentPay can do so this year, as we have added the 'Wish Lists' to the site.

Thank you for all your support.
