News round up (4)

We are back to the full swing of things again in school, with clubs starting and home learning being given.  Home learning is very important in developing habits of learning at home and understanding that revisiting work helps it stick in the memory more easily.  By getting involved in clubs, students are also becoming part of a school community and developing greater ties with the school, which in turn means they are happy in the environment.

Students have had assemblies this week on one of our core values of RESPECT.  It is important that all understand the need to be respectful of each other and understand the impact we have on each other if we are not.  Our Behaviour and Relationships Policy and approach to supporting individuals underpins this value.

This is a very personal highlight, the number of young people who have kindly asked me how I am and how I managed to need crutches as I have hobbled around the school over this last week, has been heart-warming.

FUND THE FUTURE AND GAUGE YOUR GIFT

We are always very grateful to individuals who are able to support the school financially so that we can continue to provide the best possible experience and learning outcomes for our students.  Last year the support of regular donors meant that departments benefitted from the purchase of specific resources that enhanced student learning.    We are extremely grateful for any donation of whatever value; the Gauge your Gift platform allows parents and carers to donate £3 a quarter, while Fund the Future accepts monthly donations from £5 upwards.  Any money donated by UK taxpayers qualifies for gift aid, where the UK government increases your donation by 25%, and these additional funds quickly accumulate.

We would like to thank you for your support of Charters School and in particular the support and involvement with our fundraising schemes.

ATTENDANCE

As you know the government issued new statutory guidance to schools on the approach that should be taken when promoting good attendance in school.  Our school policy HERE, sets out your responsibilities.  Attendance is vital to successfully building academic understanding in school, but as important as this, are the social skills that are developed as students move through the year groups.

The outcomes for Year 11 who sat their exams in June show an extremely strong correlation to their attendance.  The outcomes are clear no matter what student's academic ability maybe it is attendance that is a driving factor in determining progress from their starting point.

We appreciate that individuals become ill and have legitimate reasons for not being at school and some students have particular medical issues that mean that they are off school for extended periods.  We can support families in these circumstances to ensure that the impact on the individual's education is minimised.

I would like to draw your attention to page 5 of the policy:

3.7 Parents

Where this policy refers to a parent, it refers to the adult the school and/or local authority decides is most appropriate to work with, including:

  • All natural parents, whether they are married or not
  • All those who have parental responsibility for a child or young person
  • Those who have day-to-day responsibility for the child (i.e. live with and look after them)

Parents are expected to:

  • Make sure their child attends school every day and on time
  • Call the school to report their child’s absence before 09:00am on the day of the absence
and each subsequent day of absence, and advise when they are expected to return
  • Provide the school with more than 1 emergency contact for their child
  • Ensure that, where possible, appointments for their child are made outside of the school
                    day
  • Keep to any attendance contracts that they make with the school and/or local authority
  • Seek support, where necessary, for maintaining good attendance, by contacting their
child’s tutor of Head of Year as soon as concerns emerge with their child’s attendance
  • Attend appointments related to their child’s attendance as and when requested

Please work with us in ensuring that we can , along with you , support your child to get he best possible outcomes.
