NEWSLETTER - 15 MARCH
This week we had our annual Careers Fair, with a wide range of companies and Further Education institutions to help stimulate the thinking of our students. There were national and local companies represented. The students were able to ask questions of employers and also complete some practical exercises related to some of the careers. Thank you to all the companies and institutions who came along and helped give the students a small insight into future careers.
The English Department held the first of their Big Lectures today. Taking Year 11 Students through an exam paper, they demonstrated how best to answer the questions. Students were then given the opportunity to write their answers which helps them hone their exam technique. You will be able to read more about this next week.
The Senior Student Team interviews and presentations have finished this week. I am sure I speak on behalf of all the staff involved in the interviews and presentations, about how impressed we have been with the standard - not all of you will get positions but we hope that you have found the process useful to your personal development.
Students in Year 12 taking the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) will be submitting their essays next week, the breadth of study is amazing and the topics covered is wonderful and show the wide variety of interests amongst the students. A list of the essays titles can be found HERE.
We would like to remind you that the detached car park is for staff and Sixth Form students only and should not be used by parents to drop or pick up their child from school. Our Year 12 and 13 students are young and inexperienced drivers and we are getting increasing reports of inconsiderate behaviour towards them. We have designated this space for them to use so that we can help them stay safe as they grow into confident drivers. Cars have been damaged on too many occasions and we have had reports of unpleasant conversations between parents and students. Your compassion, patience and support is appreciated.
Assemblies this week have focussed on the many spring religious festivals on the horizon (Ramadan, Passover, Easter, Varsakhi, Holi), which all celebrate new life and re-birth, and tie in with this week's themes of Unity and Curiosity. Next week, Compassion will be the focus for our students, helping them to understand and embody this character pillar.
All students have Personal Development lessons, part of which includes careers advice. Please click HERE to take you to the Upcoming Opportunities page which is updated regularly with information and advice.
Some opportunities on this page involve a cost. Any student who feels that the cost of a course on this page is prohibitive, please do consider asking your parents/carers to apply for support through our Unity Fund or if you are in the 6th Form the Bursary Fund.

World Book Day 2024
Why Take on the Three Peaks Challenge? Well, why not!
SATRO STEM CHALLENGE
Year 9 Sophie has written a report about the SATRO Competition that took place on 01 February. The Final is on 20 March at Royal Holloway University and our KS4 team are competing.
An excited STEM team took a minibus to Camberley to take part in the first heat for the SATRO STEM challenge 2024! Students were split up into teams for Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 before receiving a pack with limited materials and tasked with designing and building a vehicle that could transport food from one country to another, in keeping with the theme of zero-hunger. But it gets harder… the fewer number of materials the teams used, the better their results! Which brings us onto scoring; points are usually a good thing, but in this game, the goal was a race from as hundred to zero, with the team with the lowest points crowned the winner. Throughout the challenge, teams demonstrated: resilience, communication, design skills, problem solving, teamwork and time management. In the end, all of our Charters teams worked really hard and each created unique designs that achieved the brief, putting their final results as follows:
Key Stage 3 – 2nd with 44points
Key Stage 4 – 1st with 47points
Key Stage 5 – 2nd with 55 points
As a result, the Key Stage 4 team are automatically through to the final but the others have to wait to see if they qualify for high scoring in second place. Well done to all out teams and thank you to Mrs Cook for the opportunity!
EQUIPMENT
Please can all students ensure that they have the following essential equipment with them at school every day to avoid unnecessary disruption to lessons:
GENERATION JUICE
Charters School & Cucina are extremely proud to be teaming up with Generation Juice to reduce our plastic waste. New drinks hubs are being installed which will dispense a variety of flavoured waters and juices. Students will need to purchase a token from the tills to activate the hubs to dispense the drink. We are really pleased to offer these drinks at a real value for money price point. Our team, led by Executive Chef, Jamie Hodson, will include the drinks in meal deals, and specific drink deals to offer great value for money. These drinks are currently sold as 250ml portions for 60p for one token, or 80p for two tokens (500ml) which is up to 35p cheaper than the current offering for a 500ml drink. What’s next? We need the school community to work together to support this initiative and reduce more waste and packaging from landfill. Students will need to bring a reusable drinks bottle to school to get a new generation juice drink. It is estimated, we will save around 50,000 plastic drinks bottles from landfill each year, reducing our deliveries and impact on the environment. There will be a free taster day on 22 March.
A SPRING SONG
On Wednesday 20 March at 7.00pm in the Main Hall, Charters talented music students will present our annual Spring Concert. This is guaranteed to be an enjoyable event, with a full programme of varied music for which students have been rehearsing since the beginning of the Spring term.
Please do join us on this lovely occasion! Tickets - £4.00 each - can be bought via ParentPay or at the door on the evening.
Refreshments will be available to purchase at the interval.
We look forward to welcoming you!

You name it – the Village Hall is up for it.
But – the Village Hall is a charity and its continued existence very much depends on a dedicated group of volunteers – the Trustees – who are willing to give their time, their enthusiasm, and their life skills to ensure the Village Hall continues to thrive well into the future.
The Trustee Board, chaired by Shazia Khawaja, wishes to recruit additional Trustees. If you value the role the Village Hall plays in the heart of our community and would like to find out more about what being a Trustee actually means please get in touch – we would love to hear from you.

HOPE CHURCH FOOD BANK
The Hope Church food bank takes place each Tuesday from 12pm-1pm.
The items include mainly fresh food and bakery items donated from local supermarkets. The food is at the end of its shelf life (but still perfectly fine to eat!) and would otherwise just go to waste. Bring a bag to fill up, stop for a chat and a cup of tea (and cake!!) and warm up in the church. ALL welcome, no voucher/referral required.
Hope Church, Sunningdale, The Hope Centre, High Street Sunningdale, (next to Nag’s Head).
