Spring - More Than Just a Change of Season
All week our students are learning that Spring is more than just a change of season. Our Head of Religious Studies, Mrs Grant-Miller, has been leading our assemblies this week and explaining that this time of year is seen by many religions as a time for renewal, reflection, and celebration.
The Spring Equinox takes place on 20th March, marking the transition from Winter to Spring and is the point in the year when days and nights are the same length. Students were told that the word Equinox comes from two Latin words; Aequus, meaning equal and Nox, meaning night.
During the Spring each year the Christian religion celebrates Easter, and the rebirth of Jesus three days after his crucifixion. The festival also marks the end of lent, a 40 day period of abstinence and penance, and the giving of eggs signifies rebirth.
Ramadan begins in the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, which this year it begins on 11th March. It is a sacred time for Muslims who fast from dawn until sunset for 30 days, with Eid al-Fitr celebrated as the tenth month of the lunar calendar begins. This is a time for families and friends to get together to break their fast, share meals, gifts and engage in charitable acts.
Many of the religious festivals in Spring are an opportunity for people to reflect and engage in acts of self-improvement. As a school, we always encourage our students to be the best versions of themselves and wish all our families, whichever faith you may follow, a very happy Spring.
