NEWSLETTER - 20 JANUARY

HIGHLIGHTS

On Monday the Year 10 Boys Football team progressed to the next round of the National Cup, they are now down to the last sixteen.  In all their games they have shown real spirit and togetherness   They came from behind to win 2-1 in their last game.  We wish them all the best for the next round of the cup as they continue to build on this very impressive cup run. Dare we dream of the quarter finals? As a Brighton fan for forty years I have often dreamed and it is now coming true, so lets wait and see.

On Wednesday we hosted the  Central Japan Railway Company who gave a presentation to the Japanese Club and STEM Club about a new train with revolutionary Superconducting Maglev technology that comes into service in 2027.  Over thirty students listened to the presentation and viewed a working model that demonstrated the technology that will take the train up to speeds of 177mph.

On Tuesday we held the Strategies for Success Day for Year 11.  Students were off timetable for the day and had a series of inputs form external speakers around revision, wellbeing and examination stress.  Thank you to The Sunninghill Trust for generously paying for the day so our students could have this high quality provision.

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY 27 JANUARY

This week all year groups have had an assembly delivered by Mr Cook regarding Holocaust Memorial day.  The day is a moment of reflection regarding The Holocaust and other genocides that have taken place.  If you wish to find out more information about the day and also the work of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust please follow the  LINK here.   A more detailed piece will be in the newsletter next week on the actual day of reflection.

SCHOOLS COMMUNICATION EXPECTATION

We have sent a reminder to all parents regarding communication expectation earlier in the week.  The information can be found HERE

VAPES

As you know Vapes are banned form school and students receive a sanction if caught using them or having them on their procession in school.  This is an issue being experienced by schools across the country and is a concern for us too.  This recent BBC report highlights the issue and the wider concerns.

NOTICES

UNIFORM DONATIONS

A big thank you to all parents who have made uniform donations to Mrs Welham so far.

Blazers, school trousers and KS3 (blue) and KS4 (black) ties are especially needed so if you have any that are no longer needed they would be much appreciated.

Picture1

It is KS4 black ties that are needed the most so any donations of these would really make a difference.  Please ask your child fto bring any donated uniform to Mrs Welham's office which is ii the Sixth Form block.  Go up the stairs and turn left.  Many thanks.

MUSIC OPPORTUNITIES/LESSONS

At Charters School, we believe in giving high quality musical opportunities to all of our students, knowing that they can gain real pleasure and satisfaction from joining others to play and sing. Music teaches many skills such as teamwork, resilience and communication. The skills and experiences gained through joining in these activities at school will give great enjoyment and will benefit our students throughout their lives. There have been many studies that have found that learning an instrument can raise academic achievement as well as improve spatial-temporal skills.

Secondary school is the perfect opportunity for your child to get involved in Music, whether continuing from their lessons in primary school, or starting something new. Music can provide an excellent means of making friends, and the benefits of learning an instrument can be significant.

If you are concerned about your child missing lessons Charters has a policy of a rolling timetable so your child would not miss the same lesson twice in a month. If you would like your child to receive instrumental tuition, please visit the Personal Development section of the school website: https://www.chartersschool.org.uk/77/music-opportunitieslessons or visit https://www.musicscool.co.uk/contact for more information about learning an instrument with Musicscool, our peripatetic music lesson provider.

ENOUGH COINS COLLECTED

In just a short period of time the Maths Department now have plenty of coins to play The Trading Game.

Hate food waste? Come along to Hope Church Sunningdale FOOD BANK, open to ANYONE. We have mainly fresh food and bakery items donated from local supermarkets. The food is at the end of its shelf life (but still perfectly fine to eat!) It would otherwise just go to waste. Bring a bag to fill up, stop for a chat and a cup of tea (and cake!!) and warm up in the church. ALL welcome, no voucher/referral required.
