News round up (4)

Wonderful to see the extracurricular clubs in full swing and the rehearsals for the school musical going ahead.  Such activities help students develop confidence, leadership skills and social skills that help them have a greater balance in their lives.  They also have the bonus of being away from devices during these times!

Students this week have all had assemblies informing them of the services around wellbeing and support that are here for them in school, in these assemblies the Head Team of Sixth Form Students also introduced themselves to explain their role and how they can also support.

This week we have looked at the achievement and behaviour points that have been issued since the start of term.  There have been 17,977 achievement points issued to 1,656 students.  The total number of behaviour points issued is 846 to 441 students.  It is good to see that there is so much positivity in school being recognised, and students praised for their contribution to lessons and school life.

SOCIAL AND SEN SUPPORT

We pride ourselves on the inclusive nature of our school and the support that we put in place for individuals at many different levels.   We have over the last 18 months increased our capacity in areas such as pastoral support, mentoring and SEN and we are trying our utmost to keep up with an increasing demand in these areas.  We are working in an environment of reduced resources and increasing costs in these vital areas of support so please bear with us while we are trying to support your child.

THANK YOU

We are extremely grateful to all those who began a regular donation to our school following last week's appeal.  The Gauge your Gift platform allows parents and carers to donate £3 a quarter, while Fund the Future accepts monthly donations from £5 upwards.

Support from our wider community makes a huge difference to our school and helps provide the best possible learning environment for your child.

NOTICE TILES (12)DETACHED CAR PARK 2PM-3PM DAILY

Due to several incidents at the start of this term, the detached field car park will not be opened until 3:00pm commencing Monday 23 September.  This decision has been taken due to incidents that have left students feeling intimidated by parents. We thank you for your co-operation by organising picking up your child away from the school site to help ease congestion in the area as well.

NOTICE TILES (15)

LOCKDOWN DRILL

Next week we will be running a lockdown drill, so all students are aware of this important safeguarding procedure we have in school.

NOTICE TILES (16)

BEHAVIOUR AND RELATIONSHIPS POLICY  MOBILE PHONES

Just a reminder that our new Policy does include a change to sanctions where mobile phones are being confiscated more than once.  WE will also be reminding students of this in assemblies.

On entering the school gates, students should have their mobile phones, or any other similar device turned off and in their school bag.

  • Once past the school gates, any student seen with a mobile device out of their bag, without the permission of a member of staff, then it will be confiscated, without exception, and handed into the relevant place. This is currently student reception.
  • This does include Apple Watches and other smart watches if they are used for anything other than telling the time.
  • Students can collect their device at the end of the day but a Daily After School Consequence (DASC) will be set by the person confiscating the device.
  • Further confiscations for the same student will lead to an escalation of consequences
  • Second time – Headteachers Consequence (HTC)
  • Third time – Internal Suspension and mobile device to be collected by parents
  • HOY will review and intervene if it becomes a further persistent infringement.
  • If a student refuses to hand in their mobile device, then all staff will remind the student of the schools’ policy using common phraseology. Failure to hand in the mobile phone at this point will lead to an Internal Suspension. This will be reported on Arbor.

NOTICE TILES (5)

ARBOR

If you have not already done so, please log into your parent account as ARBOR provides you with vital information regarding the progress of your child and timetable and achievement information.

As part of our phased transfer to ARBOR as our management information system in school this year we have moved to using ARBOR for homework and recording achievement and behaviour there are some transition problems that we are working through, as with any major IT rollout.

BUS TIMETABLE CHANGES - EFFECTIVE 23 SEPTEMBER

From Monday 23 September bus routes 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 and C5 will run 15 minutes earlier than they do at present every morning.  This will ensure all buses will arrive at school between 8.00am and 8.15am (conditional on road traffic conditions) and allow more time for late running services to arrive in time for the start of the school day at 8.25am.  Students should wait at their designated bus stop 15 minutes earlier than usual from Monday.

Bus services E335 and 500 are not affected by this change, those timetables will remain unchanged.

NOTICE TILES (11)SCHOOL PICK UP AND DROP-OFF

Could we please remind all parents to be considerate to others when using the pickup / drop-off area at the front of school and the Leisure Centre car park.  Due to the number of vehicles that need to move through the site in a short period of time we ask that you move on immediately so that others can follow in behind you.  This also helps the traffic on the surrounding roads to keep moving.  In both areas we also request you do not park in the marked car park bays and if you do need to stop, for example, to make a phone call, you do so off site.  These small requests will help keep our car parks safer and traffic moving.  Finally, a reminder that the coach park at the front of school is for coaches, staff and access to disabled bays only.  Thank you for your co-operation.

NOTICE TILES (14)SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS

This year’s school photographs are now available to order. Your child should have brought home their individual image code on the day that the photographs were taken, and this should be entered here to view the proofs. Should you have mislaid the image code, please contact us: charters@chartersschool.org.uk

CHILD EMPLOYMENT

Getting a part-time job is often an important part of a young person’s life, teaching them vital life skills, and providing their first step on the road to financial security and independence.

There are regulations in place to make sure children seeking work are safe and protected. The regulations ensure that the child is not working outside the legal hours, they are not doing any types of work that are prohibited, and that the school is fully aware of what they are doing.  This way, we can all work together to ensure that our children are safe, that they are working legally, and that their school work does not suffer. This link explains the laws surrounding Child Employment: https://www.nncee.org.uk/page/45/employment

The most important thing to remember, is that it is a legal requirement that any child from the age of 13 up to statutory school leaving age needs a work permit if they would like to get a part time job, regardless of where they are working.  It is down to the employer to initiate the permit process, but unfortunately some employers may need a reminder. It is therefore important that parents are aware, so they can prompt the workplace to apply, get the ball rolling, or contact me for advice, if necessary.

Susan Harris is the Child Employment Officer at RBWM and they are happy to chat to parents or students over any aspects of this process. Email address for any information, advice, and the issue of work permits is: susan.harris@achievingforchildren.org.uk
