NEWSLETTER - 19 JULY
The last full week of term has seen a flurry of activity as we end the school year as busy as we started it.
Last week after the newsletter went out we had the final performance of a Monster Calls in the Drama Studio, the two performances were sold out and showcased the wonderful talent of the cast in delivering this very hard-hitting play about the impact on a family of a parent dying of cancer. A very difficult play to perform but wonderfully done. The production shows the strength in depth within the department and encourages our students to take on challenging roles extending their acting range. They had performed to two full houses.
Year 10 have completed their English Spoken language assessment for their GCSE’s this week as part of a collapsed timetable day in which they also had an extended presentation on sexism and misogyny. This is an annual event and one that we feel is very important for all out students to listen to and understand. The presentation is delivered by an organisation called Beyond This.
Year 7 students this week have had their African Drumming experience learning the rhymes of techniques of West African drumming traditions. The sounds of the beat wafted across the school at points, giving a tropical feeling as temperatures have slowly edged up this week.
We have also seen some students help with the installation of the new irrigation system that has been laid to keep the garden development in the Maine Centre area watered over the summer, alongside the new sleeper beds being laid in the garden, the whole area is starting to look fantastic.
START OF TERM
Looking forward to the new school year, here are a few reminders:
Wednesday 4 September 2024 for Years 7 and 12 ONLY – students in school for 8:30
Thursday 5 September for all other year groups – students in school for 8:30
At Charters we believe that uniform helps every student to develop a sense of pride, community and self-esteem. When wearing school uniform, students are representatives of Charters and must be aware that they carry responsibility for the school’s reputation. Students must wear full school uniform when travelling to and from school. If a student has a problem with their uniform, parents should inform their child’s Tutor or Head of Year. Not being in full school uniform is deemed as a breach of the school rules and students will be sanctioned appropriately. If students arrive at school in incorrect uniform with a valid reason, they will be given uniform to put on or a uniform pink slip. A student who repeatedly refuses to wear the correct school uniform will receive a consequence. Here is a comprehensive list of the Charters school uniform.
We would like to say thank you to all those who have kindly donated funds to enable us to once again create Charters Essential Parcels for those in need. We have partnered with Hope Church Food Bank and are grateful for their help in creating and sharing the parcels. The video below shows the range of fresh food and bakery items available between 12 - 1pm each Tuesday and this may be useful during the long summer holidays. The food is at the end of its shelf life but still perfectly fine to eat and would otherwise just go to waste. Bring a bag to fill up, stop for a chat and a cup of tea. ALL welcome, no voucher/referral required.
Hope Church, Sunningdale, The Hope Centre, High Street Sunningdale, (next to Nag’s Head).
To ensure that we can continue to supply Essential Parcels, please keep voting for us by posting your Tesco Strong Starts tokens at the end of your shop. Help us earn £1500,£1000 or £500 by posting a token at one of the following Tesco branches at: Martins Heron, Warfield, Ascot, Forest Park or Sunninghill. GOOGLE CLOUD X FORMULA E AI HACKATHON
Year 12 Computer Science students Solomon and Caitlin are at the Google Hackathon at the ExCel Centre in London today. They are two of just three school age children there, and have successfully negotiated a fairly tortuous re-registration process (the administrative system was having tech issues!) and are working with teams to help design the next generation of Formula E racing car systems. There are around a thousand attendees including some very experienced and skilful coders, so it is very impressive how they have both got stuck in amidst a very daunting situation to further their learning and experience.
STOCK MARKET CHALLENGE
Write up Jason Year 12
Attending the stock market challenge at Henly Business School, we worked as two teams in order to gain an insight into the experience of operating in the volatile stock market, competing with other colleges forming 32 teams. Simulations of market conditions and economic shocks demonstrated the unpredictability of trading, requiring us to efficiently work together taking different roles in each trading pit, communicating between ourselves and with other teams in a hectic environment and creating strategy in order to amass profits to outclass competition. The experience was split into two periods with a practice session to allow us to learn the ropes, in which we did quickly allowing us to excel in each half. It was a great experience, providing a greater understanding of the always-fluctuating stock market - and economy - while allowing exploration into trading and the financial sector, overall being an enjoyable and valuable day working together and being able to meet new people!

A huge congratulations again to our students Holly (9D), Annabelle (9I) and Josh (who recently just finished Year 13) who represented Berkshire in the English Schools Track & Field Championships over the 12-13 July!
Holly competed in the 800m and came 6th in her heat - just missing out on a PB by 0.27s! However, overall, she positioned 13th out of 30.
Annabelle competed in the Long Jump and jumped 4.97m – 18cm off her PB!
Josh competed in the 2000m Steeple Chase and finished 8th with a PB of 6:18:53! Well done to all our students!

Our Year 7 & 8 Girls Tennis team (Lana – 8F, Kiara – 7E, Evie – 8E and Amber – 8D) played in the Year 7 & 8 Girls LTA Youth Schools Tennis semi-final against The Abbey on Monday 1 July. It was an extremely close match which eventually went into a tie break. In the end, The Abbey took the win (8-10) but the Charters team played brilliantly and were a credit to the school. Well done girls!

Well done boys!

SELF-CARE SUMMER TOOLKIT - ANNA FREUD MENTALLY HEALTHY SCHOOLS
It's nearly the summer holidays and the end of another school year. For pupils in both secondary and primary schools, this is a joyous time. Weeks of endless daytime lay ahead to be spend in the sunshine either at home or abroad. For staff, a well-deserved holiday awaits to allow you to recharge your batteries, and indulge in much needed personal time. But as the school gates close across the country, some staff and pupils may be at a loss. The structure that holds their days together will snap, and they'll be left with little to do. Some may have issues at home, for which school is a welcome reprieve. Others may attend school away from where they live, and as such will be bereft of dearly held friendships. The Anna Freud organisation, aimed at delivering mentally healthy schools has been looking at this issue and has produced their self-care summer toolkit. If interested in looking at their resources, please follow the links below:
