News round up (4)

Well done to the U13 girls' cricket team who have made it through the regional finals being held in Southampton on 8 July, they batted, bowled, and fielded impressively in the knockout tournament finishing second and being the highest-placed state school.   We are waiting to hear about the U15 who are subject to fiendish cricket calculations to see if they have qualified - it makes the Duckworth Lewis method look like the 2 times table!

The Maine Centre Garden is coming along as they say.  Mr Watts and his trustee band of students are helping to turn the wonderful donations we have received into a lovely garden that we will be able to enjoy more later on in the summer and in the new school year.  The project has been supported by Jewson as well as Hilliers Garden Centre and the Little Muddle Boots team, who have helped us have a makeover of the garden space. There will also be a donation from Selco being delivered next week to add to this. The students helping Mr Watts are very much enjoying, not only the physical effort but also learning about the plants and what is needed to look after them.  We are hoping to expand the project next year to make this area of the school a very positive space for the students helping to develop it.

The Sixth Formers are organising the Charters School election on the 1st and 2nd July.  Each tutor group will act as a constituency and students will be able to vote for the seven local candidates for the Windsor constituency in which the school is situated.  A full list of these candidates can be seen here The big question is will the school reflect the local outcome.

Thank you to all of you who completed our annual parent feedback survey.  We are looking at the responses we have received and are using it as part of a planning process in school. We will be launching a new behaviour policy in September, which we know will address some of the points raised by respondents.  Thank you for the overwhelmingly positive comments in the open section as well as 88% of respondents saying that they would recommend Charters to another parent.

We had one of our unannounced drug dog visits on Monday.  I am pleased to report that the dogs did not indicate any student as having any illegal substances.  We are not naïve to believe that none of our students use illegal drugs, but we are confident that this does not happen on the school site.

There is a rising concern that individuals simply do not understand the impact of vaping, a recent piece in the Metro newspaper hits home on the impact on a 17-year-old with significant health issues due to the amount of hidden nicotine in the vapes she used HERE

NOTICE TILES (2)IMPORTANT NOTICE: YEAR 9 CURRICULUM EVENING

Please can all parents of Year 9 students confirm attendance to the Year 9 Curriculum Evening that is being held on Thursday 27 June from 5:30 to 6:30pm in school. The evening will cover what to expect at key stage 4, how to build a strong foundation as well as how to support your child at home. Please confirm attendance here if you haven't already!  Thank you.

NOTICE TILES (17)EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION LESSON

In a world that is becoming more and more dominated by social media and remote messaging we feel it is really important to spend some time with students to research, investigate and discuss how to effectively communicate with each other, and in all sorts of different ways and situations. This might be verbally, by letter or by email. Next week, beginning 24 June, all students will have a lesson on communication in one of their English lessons where this will be covered. It would be great if the conversation could be continued at home, perhaps around the dinner table, please find here a link to the presentation used so that you can see what was shared and discussed with students.

NOTICE TILES (20)KEEPING YOUR BOTTLE CLEAN

We hope that you are enjoying the drinks from our new Generation Juice drinks hubs we installed after Easter to help reduce our plastic waste as a community. So far since we installed these drinks hubs, we have saved over 13,000 single use bottles from landfill, thank you for supporting this project. Please be aware that the drinks we serve are made with real fruits. If the drink is left in the bottle over time, it can go off and turn sour. It’s important that reusable bottles are kept clean daily, and any unconsumed drink is discarded to prevent the natural fruits to go off. This will ensure a great tasting drink time and time again.

TIME FOR A CLEAR OUT OF PRE-LOVED UNIFORM

Our biggest Pre-Loved Uniform sale takes place at the Summer Fair in two weeks time. This is a great opportunity to have a clear out and donate unwanted uniform, especially for Year 11 parents.  We will be collecting uniform on Tuesday 25 June from 3 - 3.30pm under the shelter at the back of Sixth Form.  Please note that items must be clean and please only donate clothing that you would be happy for your own child to wear.  We then need volunteers to help sort and prepare donated items ready for the sale on the Saturday.   THANK YOU

NOTICE TILES (22)HELP!  WE NEED YOU!

Our Summer Fair next Saturday will be a wonderful community day and we hope you all will be able to join us.  There is always that moment though after a fantastic gathering, when someone has to start 'clearing away the dishes' and when everybody joins in to help - it is always so much easier.  Therefore we are asking for volunteers to help us tidy up from 4pm on Saturday 29 June so that we can all get home to watch the Euros!  If you can help, please let our Marketing Team know.  Thank you, it will be really appreciated.
