NEWSLETTER - 19 JANUARY

HIGHLIGHTS

This week we started the interview process for students hoping to join the Sixth Form. We start this process with our Year 11 students and then move on to external candidates.  It is uplifting in these meetings to hear from the students what their plans are and what they do to help them unwind and cope with the stresses of building up to exams.  These have included: Greco-Roman wrestling, tennis, gardening, going to church, photography, rugby, football, netball and cooking to name a few.  It is great to hear that they have coping mechanisms in place to help them, it is also good to see that they are involved in activities outside of school.

When they join the Sixth Form there is an abundance of opportunities as noted by OFSTED  Leaders ensure that pupils benefit from an extensive programme of clubs and enrichment activities.  The list of these years activities can be found here

These opportunities alongside the excellent subject support and wider support around the next steps really do help students write their own future with us.

More general information about the Sixth Form can be found here

Last week we launched our new ‘Gauge Your Gift’ campaign.  Thank you to all the members of our community who have supported this initiative, we are very grateful for your donations.   All the monies raised will be used to support students in school.  If you would like to set up a regular donation, you can follow the link here.

In a recent survey of school sports in all secondary schools across the country, both state and private, Charters was ranked 196.  This puts us in the top 5% of schools for the sports.  The criteria is as follows:  "Reaching the top 30 puts you in the top 1% of the country's state or independent sporting schools, the top 100 puts you in the top 3% while the top 200 puts you in the top 5%. Schools usually have to reach the later stages of at least two, three or four national competitions to make the list"

Well done to the PE department and all the young people who take part in the sports clubs and teams we run in school - see the news story below for more details.

Strategies for Success Day
Throughout the students' time at school, we are working with them to develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. Embedded through Personal Development Lessons (PDL) we teach them about dealing with stress as they build to assessments and examinations.   For Year 11, as we enter the final thirteen school weeks before GCSEs start, they have been off timetable today for a final whole year group input into helping them being as successful as possible.

Today they have had outside speakers from Learning Performance who have focussed on revision techniques for success, this is building on what has already been covered in PDL lessons.  There has also been sessions on how to manage stress and growth mindset.

There is a section on the school website HERE which gives information about how you can support at home as well.

Thank you to The Sunninghill Trust or funding this extremely important day for the whole cohort in Year 11.

Volunteering can be a brilliant way to boost your wellbeing. It’s a great feeling knowing you’re helping young people get skills for life, and you might even learn a lot about yourself along the way.

We have a really long waiting list of young people wanting to join and we would love to open one new section each for Squirrels, Beavers and Cubs, and also increase the number of our Scout and Explorer leaders.

In order to do this, we need to find twenty-four enthusiastic adults to join us so that we can offer even more Scouting opportunities to the young people in the local area.  No prior experience is needed, and you don’t need to have a young person in the group.

So, if you would like to meet new people, try new activities, get outside more, and make a real positive impact for our local community, why not drop-in to our open day.  We’ll explain all about it and you can chat to some of our current leaders to find out exactly what is involved. Oh, and there will also be food from the BBQ, cake and hot drinks for you!

If you can’t make the open day or want to find out more then there is a lot more information on our website: https://sunningdalescouts.org.uk/

We’re really looking forward to meeting you on the 28th!

LOCAL UNIVERSITY CENTRE OFFERING DAYTIME INFORMATION EVENTS

The events are expected to be popular with parents who are not able to visit during the evening.

University Centre Farnborough is expanding and has seen consistent demand from parents who wish to return to the classroom without the fuss of moving away or travelling during peak-times to other universities.

The popularity amongst mature students of the local University Centre’s degrees in Criminology, English Literature, Modern History, Psychology, and Sociology has led to four new information drop-in sessions being announced over the coming months.

At the sessions, visitors can have an informal conversation with lecturers about the University Centre’s unique joint honours degrees which are delivered in two years rather than the more conventional three-year format.

The degrees are particularly suitable for those looking to train as a teacher as the reduction in time and fees needed to graduate puts a final year of studying a teacher training course within closer reach.

The Open Mornings will be held on Tuesday 20 February and Tuesday 7 May from 10.30am – midday; the afternoon sessions are Thursday 22 February and Thursday 9 May from 4.30pm – 6pm.

Visit www.ucfarnborough.ac.uk to register your place and find out more about the opportunities to get into higher education on your doorstep.
