NEWSLETTER - 29 SEPTEMBER

HIGHLIGHTS

The Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 Sports Awards presentations took place on Wednesday Evening.  It was fantastic to see so many students receiving recognition and awards for playing school, as well as higher-level, sports and representing the borough, county and country.  As we all know, participating in any sport is good for wellbeing so to see so many taking part in the two events was heartening.

We also had the Year 7 Curriculum Evening on Thursday, where Year 7 parents came into school to gain a greater understanding of the curriculum.  The evening also meant that they were able to experience mini-lessons to give them an idea of how the departments approach teaching their sons/daughters.

There are always conversations that can make you smile, a group of Year 7 students were sitting in the Oasis Garden early in the week eating their packed lunches, discussing what was in them when one of the boys said ‘let's talk about something important who is better Ronaldo or Messi?’ I don’t know what they thought, I was just surprised they had considered Mitoma.

TRUSTEES

Mr Richard Evans, Chair of Trustees, has stepped down from his position.  We would like to thank Richard for his work as a Trustee since 2017 and being Chair since 2020.  Richard has helped to guide the school through the pandemic and also the recovery from it.  He will not be leaving the trustee Board straight away.

Mrs. Sally Graham, will be succeeding Richard in the position of Chair of Trustees. She has been on the Board of Trustees since June 2022 and has been the link to Trustees for Safeguarding.  She has three children at the school.  A more detailed biography will be published on the school website.

LOCKDOWN DRILL

This coming week we will be carrying out a lockdown drill to ensure that all staff are aware of the procedures that we use should we have to lock the school down for any reason.

REGULAR DONATIONS

Thank you to the Year 7 parents who have begun a regular donation to Charters following the Curriculum Evening on Thursday. Regular donations make a lasting impact on our School and our students, and help us to manage the short-term urgent needs which arise at Charters.

Any contribution is entirely voluntary, and even £5 per month from those who can afford it, would make a huge difference. This is equivalent to...

£5 The cost of 3 hours of parking in Windsor Yards car park, WindsorThe combination of many small donations could be transformative. If 300 families donated £5 a month we could raise £18,000 in just one year. If you are able to begin a regular donation to Charters School please use this link. Thank you

PARKING IN THE LOCAL AREA

Can we please ask that parents are respectful of residents when they park in the local area and ensure that students are not dropped off and picked up in dangerous places. Please do not park in such a way that means other cars cannot pass safely.  Thank you for being considerate.

YEAR 7 CONCERTS

We are looking forward to the Year 7 concerts which will be taking place on Tuesday 10 October for 7A, 7B, 7C, 7D and 7E and Wednesday 11 October for 7F, 7G, 7H and 7I. Tickets are £5 for a family and can be purchased on ParentPay. The concerts begin at 5.00pm and will last for around 45 minutes.

NOTICES

REMINDER: DELIVERIES FOR STUDENTS ARE NOT ACCEPTED

We are a large campus and we do not have the capacity to run around delivering items students have forgotten/left at home/in the car etc.  It is a student’s responsibility to bring the correct equipment for the day in with them in the morning. Please do not be offended when we decline to accept items arriving at Reception.

We make an exception for essential medication and for packed lunches, although top ups on ParentPay become available for students to use at the tills in the Dining Hall within minutes of being placed. So this is often the better option.

ROAD SAFETY AWARENESS

The days are getting crisper and as the morning and afternoons become darker, can we remind students to remain alert when crossing roads and traversing narrow pavements on their journeys to and from school.  We have had a couple of near misses recently where students, wearing airpods, have stepped out into the road to cross over without looking and have walked straight inn front of cars.    The resources below will help remind children, including teenagers, about road safety and keeping safe in the dark.

CHILD EMPLOYMENT - A MESSAGE FROM RBWM

Getting a part-time job is often an important part of a young person’s life, teaching them vital life skills, and providing their first step on the road to financial security and independence.

There are regulations in place to make sure children seeking work are safe and protected. The regulations ensure that the child is not working outside the legal hours, they are not doing any types of work that are prohibited, and that the school is fully aware of what they are doing.  This way, we can all work together to ensure that our children are safe, that they are working legally, and that their school work does not suffer. This link explains the laws surrounding Child Employment: https://www.nncee.org.uk/page/45/employment

The most important thing to remember, is that it is a legal requirement that any child from the age of 13 up to statutory school leaving age needs a work permit if they would like to get a part time job, regardless of where they are working.  It is down to the employer to initiate the permit process, but unfortunately some employers may need a reminder. It is therefore important that parents are aware, so they can prompt the workplace to apply, get the ball rolling, or contact me for advice, if necessary.

I am happy to chat to parents or pupils over any aspects of this process.

I am the Child Employment Officer and my email address for any information, advice, and the issue of work permits is: susan.harris@achievingforchildren.org.uk
