HIGHLIGHTS...

We had two fantastic pieces of news week.  Firstly one of our students in Year 12, Lauren, entered an essay writing competition run by Newnham College, University of Cambridge.  The essay was on the importance of mathematical modelling in understanding climate change and influencing policymakers.  The panel of judges highly commended her essay and commented 'Good Essay.  You presented the topic well, and you looked at many different ways in which mathematics plays a role…'  You can read Lauren's essay here. 

Secondly, Matilde in Year 10 represented England at a recent international golf head-to-head against Spain.  Although the team did not win, Malitide won her match against her opponent who is above her in the European rankings.  Well done, Maltide!  Onwards down the fairway.  Read the story via our NEWS link below.

EXTERNAL EXAMINATIONS

Thank you to all the students who are being so mindful of the signs around the school site where we have exams taking place.  On some days we have about 330 students taking their public exams.  There are two more weeks left for Year 11 and Year 13; hang in there, they are nearly done.

PRIDE MONTH

Once again, this year, we are flying the pride flag for the month of June.  We do this each year in line with many institutions and commercial enterprises to highlight our commitment to all forms of equality in school and beyond.  BBC Newsround has a useful summary of what and why this is celebrated. 

DUKE OF EDINBURGH

Well done to all the students taking part in the expeditions being run at the moment.  Across the three awards, we have had 200 students taking to the hills over the last few weeks.  I am sure they are learning a lot about themselves, making great memories and dealing with blisters and sore backs.  Still, that's all part of the fun, isn't it?

CAN YOU HELP WITH OUR NEWS DAY?  WE NEED VOLUNTEERS

A couple of weeks ago we asked for volunteers to help with our Year 9 Handling the News Day on Friday 1 July where the entire year group will be 'off timetable' for the day.  

Students will be placed in news groups – The Times, The Sun, The Independent etc. and assigned roles such as editor or reporter. During the day, the news groups will be fed a series of news stories and it is up to them to send a reporter and/or photographer to the specified location around school where a ‘press release’ about the story will take place. The students will listen to the press release and then have the opportunity to ask questions. They then decide what stories they will use and how they will write up the story.

We still need guests who can provide the news stories. We will write a story for you to deliver and this can link to your field of expertise or business. We would require volunteers for up to 30 minutes during the morning of 1 July.

BIOLOGY CHALLENGE

Well done to all our Year 9 and 10 students who took part in the Biology Challenge 2022. They completed this online competition in their science lessons along with over 41,000 students from 550 schools worldwide, before half-term and the results are now in. We are so proud that four students achieved Gold and seventeen students achieved Silver (in the top 20% of all entries), along with many Bronze, Highly Commended and Commended entries.  Congratulations to you all!

NOTICES

YEAR 12 ONLINE PARENTS' EVENING

The Year 12 Online Parents’ Evening is on Thursday 23 June and that bookings will be available from Tuesday 14 June.

ATTENDANCE

The Department for Education has published new guidance for schools around attendance to come into effect from September 2022.  We have been working through our systems to ensure that we can provide you with all the information you will need.

Attendance in school is fundamental to learning and social development as such it is vital that young people are in school.  The new guidance around term holidays and authorised attendance for illness is becoming firmer.   In due course, we will communicate our new Attendance policy and procedures with you in light of the new government guidance. 

NOMINATE THE SCHOOL TO HELP STOCK THE LIBRARY

National Book Tokens are giving five schools a £1,000 prize each, as well as a year's membership to the School Library Association, to help expand their range of books and encourage reading for pleasure.

It would be great if you could nominate Charters so we might be in with a chance to win this £1000 book token prize which would help transform our Library.  You could also win a £100 National Book Token to spend in your favourite bookshop or online!

UK HEALTH AND SECURITY AGENCY 

Has published a general guidance document and asked all schools to inform parents and carers.  'Guidance for people with monkeypox infection who are isolating at home', which states: "If you have been diagnosed with monkeypox and you have been advised to self-isolate at home by your doctor, you should not go to work, school or public areas." The school will need to be advised so we can make provision for online learning once a formal diagnosis is in place.

YEAR 11 AND YEAR 13 PARENTPAY ACCOUNTS

Please plan to spend down dinner money balances during the summer term if you know you are leaving Charters School in the summer. 

You may still need money for food during the exam period but please be aware that the administration costs involved in processing refunds means that only balances over £5 are refunded.
