THIS WEEK
HIGHLIGHTS
Welcome back to the Summer Term. It is always an exciting term with lots going on and for the first time in two years a full set of externally assessed public examinations.
This week I had the privilege of being able to read an essay written by a Year 10 student on the current situation in the Ukraine as part of their FPQ project. It was a fascinating read as it explored whether the Russian claim to Ukraine is legitimate. The essay showed a comprehensive understanding of the present and historical geopolitical position that has led to the current situation.
Earlier in the week I met with one of our Year 11 students and presented him with three certificates from the exam board AQA that highlighted his carpentry skills. It was great to see the work he has also completed, he proudly showed me the kennels area he had helped to build. He has previously made cheeseboards, stools and tables that he has given to staff to say thank you for the support he has been given. I am pleased to say that he has secured a job working with the skills he has gained.
UNITY DAY MUFTI
Students from all year groups showed their Unity for one another today as we celebrated our school’s birthday by donating £1 and dressing in red, white and blue mufti. Unity is one of our core values and the donations will be added to our school’s new Unity Fund, which has been kick-started by a generous £1,000 donation from one of our families. The fund is a discretionary source of financial assistance for our disadvantaged students and aims to support students whose families may be experiencing financial difficulties. We have raised over £1,200 from today’s mufti day and would like to thanks all those who supported this initiative.
THANK YOU
To all the parents who completed the on-line questionnaire before the Easter break. This will help us identify any common areas for development and a focus for us to continue to provide the best possible support and education we can for your sons and daughters.
One aspect that was highlighted by a number of people was wanting more information about course content. At the bottom of each newsletter we provide links to this information so please do make use it as it contains curriculum maps and other important information to help parents support learning at home.
LITTER
Can you please remind your sons/daughters of the importance of using litter bins, not just in school but also in the local community. We have received a complaint from a local resident regarding litter being dropped by students. Thank you
PUBLIC EXAMINATIONS 2022
JCQ has published guidance for special consideration for students in the examination series this summer. This guidance can be found on our Examinations page. The school can only operate within this guidance. It outlines when special consideration will be taken into account.
ATTENDANCE - TEXT INFORMATION AND COVID PROTOCOLS
Our text number for reporting attendance issues has been discontinued.
Please report any absence via email to attendance@chartersschool.org.uk giving the
- Child’s full name
- Tutor group
- A short description of the reason for absence
Alternatively, please phone on 01344 298712 to leave a voicemail.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the current protocols regarding COVID 19 at school. If your child has a high temperature they should stay at home and rest until their temperature is back to normal. There is no requirement to test. If your child does take a test because they are unwell with COVID 19 symptoms (high temperature, cough, runny nose/ cold) and they test positive; they should stay home from school for 3 days counting day one as the date of the test with two further days at home before returning on day 4. They should not return to school if they still have a high temperature. In these instances, students need to remain at home and rest.

TENNIS SUCCESS
Our Year 9 and 10 Boys got off to a flying start in the Division 1 LTA Youth Schools Tennis League on Monday. Oliver Dickason, Louis Hunting, Oliver Checkiewicz and Henrique Rodrigues who are the U15 team, won the first of what will be four outings against Wellington College. Tennis Coach Simon Grassi said "Charters U15 Boys beat Wellington first team five matches to one, which is a great result. Everyone played really well showing great teamwork in the doubles. Oliver Dickason playing number 1 showed a mature mentality to come back from 5-2 to win his singles 7-5."
Well done to the team and we hope that the rest of the season is as productive.
