Spotlight on... Outdoor Education Coordinator
With warmer weather hopefully on the horizon and students embarking on various Duke of Edinburgh practice trips, this month's 'Spotlight on...' features our Outdoor Education Coordinator, Miss De'Ath.
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB INVOLVE?
My Job involves coordinating the Outdoor Education trips at Charters School and the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. This includes arranging bookings with the centres, campsites and activity providers, completing risk assessments for both activities and individuals, leading parent meetings, organising which staff go and ensuring they have the correct knowledge for the trip, as well as teaching PE full time.
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR ROLE?
There are lots of rewarding parts! Watching the year 7's come home from a successful weeks residential wanting to tell everyone about what an amazing week they had, with the new friends they made and the barriers they overcame. Seeing all the young people build their resilience on their Duke of Edinburgh award whether it be their Bronze, Silver or Gold. The award is constructed in four parts, some find the expedition challenging, some the volunteering, lots develop their curiosity learning a new skill but watching them overcome this to achieve their award over a period of time is fantastic.
WHAT DO YOU FIND THE MOST CHALLENGING?
One of the most challenging parts is having multiple trips going out together. The nature of my job means the summer term becomes very busy and I am often organising three trips at once and often being on one expedition whilst organising the next! This can be pretty tough especially on top of my normal teaching hours.
WHAT IS THE THING YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF ACHIEVING SINCE JOINING CHARTERS?
Organising the Three Peaks Challenge! To be part of a huge fundraising event with the benefit of being able to help others through our determination is fantastic! Let's cross our fingers and hope we can do it in 24 hours and achieve the fundraising target of £10000!
Miss De'Ath is one of the ten members of staff who will be climbing the three highest peaks in the UK over 28 - 29 June, and there are several ways that you can be part of this amazing achievement. Visit our Three Peaks Challange Sponsorship page for more information on how you can get involved and come along to the Summer Fair on Saturday 29 June from 12-4pm to enjoy a fun-filled day and celebrate the completion of the challenge with them.
