Spotlight on... Head of Year 7
As April sees our Year 7s embark on their first residential trip as Charters students, this month's 'Spotlight on...' features our Head of Year 7, Mr Tachon.
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB INVOLVE?
As the Head of Year 7, my role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities aimed at developing a supportive environment for our students as they transition into secondary school. From overseeing their academic progress to providing pastoral care and guidance, every aspect of my job is focused around nurturing the growth and success of Year 7 students.
My day-to-day responsibilities involve ensuring the smooth transition of Year 7 students to life at Charters. This includes helping students to familiarise themselves with the school layout, routines, and expectations. I work closely with form tutors, subject teachers, and support staff to monitor students' progress, identify any challenges they may be facing, and implement strategies to address them effectively.
Furthermore, I oversee the pastoral care of Year 7 students, providing a space for them to be listened to, guidance when needed, and support to help them navigate the social and emotional complexities of secondary school. Whether it's resolving conflicts between peers, offering advice on personal issues, or providing a safe space for students to express themselves, I am committed to fostering a positive and inclusive school culture where every student feels valued and supported.
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YOUR ROLE?
The most rewarding aspect of my role is seeing the transformation and personal growth of Year 7 students throughout the academic year. It's incredibly rewarding to see students develop confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging as they overcome difficulties and embrace new opportunities. Whether it's taking on the academic challenges, participating in extracurricular activities, or demonstrating kindness and leadership, every achievement, no matter how big or small, is a testament to their hard work and determination. Knowing that I've played a part in shaping their educational experience and helping them lay the foundation for future success fills me with great pride.
WHAT DO YOU FIND THE MOST CHALLENGING?
One of the most challenging aspects of my role is addressing the different range of concerns of Year 7 students. Adolescence is a time of significant change and transition, and students may face numerous challenges, including academic pressure, social anxiety, and personal struggles. Balancing these varying needs while providing personalised support and guidance to each student can be a complex and demanding task. Additionally, helping students navigate the transition from primary to secondary school and cope with the academic rigors and social dynamics of their new environment requires patience, empathy, and understanding. It's essential to create a supportive and inclusive atmosphere where students feel comfortable seeking help and expressing themselves openly.
WHAT IS THE THING YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF ACHIEVING SINCE JOINING CHARTERS?
I am most proud that I feel I am having a positive impact on the Year 7 students. I feel I have developed a sense of community and belonging. Building strong relationships with students, parents and colleagues, and contributing to the overall success and wellbeing of our school community are achievements I hold dear.
I am also proud of helping student to overcome obstacles, celebrate their accomplishments, or navigate the ups and downs of adolescence, knowing that I've made a difference in their lives fills me with a sense of pride.
