SATRO Finals

Report of the SATRO competiton by Year 12 student Michaela.
Recently, we were given the incredible opportunity to participate in the SATRO problem solving challenge. After being named the winning group within the KS5 heat at a local school, we were invited to compete at the finals on the 27th of March, held at the University of Surrey in Guilford.
Our visit to the university was such a privilege; allowing us not only to compete in the next level of our STEM based problem solving challenge but also to explore the campus and consider what studying at their amazing facilities would be like with university applications around the corner. For example, prior to the start of the 90-minute task, we had the chance to talk to the Head of Astronomy, as well as get a private tour of the university’s outdoor telescope. Which we all found intriguing despite only 2 of the 6 of us actually taking Physics A-Level!
Despite it coming quite close, we were awarded 2nd place and lost by a single point at the finals, however we still feel incredibly grateful and proud of our participation.
SATRO supplied us with a fantastic opportunity to improve our scientific problems-solving skills, which I’m sure will be highly appreciated within our science A-Levels as well as a chance to improve our core communication skills as a group of Year 12 students.
Our team consisted of myself, Amber, Evie, Sophia, Owen and Billy.
Thank you SATRO for setting up this event and thank you to The University of Surrey for kindly hosting us, as well as a huge thank you to Ms Von Moltke and the rest of the Charter’s Science department for organising this fantastic event! We look forward to next year!
