The Charters School community united last weekend for a special occasion – the inaugural Charters Stags rugby match. Held on a beautiful spring afternoon, the event saw staff, sixth form students, alumni, and former staff gather to celebrate the school's rich sporting tradition with a spirited game against Camberley RFC.

Named after Charters School’s first headteacher, the Waddleton Cup became the coveted prize of the day. Though the Charters Stags battled valiantly through both halves, Camberley RFC ultimately emerged victorious, lifting the Waddleton Cup amidst applause and camaraderie.

Beyond the thrilling rugby action, the day offered something for everyone. Charters School’s talented musicians entertained the crowd with live performances, while local company Naan and Sizzle provided mouth-watering Indian street food. Disruption Brewery and Bougee Bar contributed to the festive atmosphere, creating a true community celebration.

But the event was about more than just fun and sport. Attendees rallied around a shared purpose: raising funds for the Sowers & Growers Garden. Part of the school’s alternative provision, the garden offers students the opportunity to engage in restorative conversations with specialist staff while nurturing crops and connecting with nature. The initiative has become a vital space for reflection and personal growth.

Thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of everyone involved, the event raised nearly £2,000 for the Sowers & Growers Garden. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the players and community members who made the day so memorable. A special thank you must go Mr Watts, for organising the event, and to our Site Manager, Mr Burch and his family, who worked tirelessly before, throughout, and after the event ferrying chairs and tables, running electric cables, and generally making sure the day went with a swing.

With its successful debut, the Charters Stags match is set to become a cherished tradition. Here’s to many more years of camaraderie, competition, and community spirit!
