Mock Trial Competition

Last week saw Mrs Phipps and Mrs Draper-Arif accompany a very talented group of Year 9 students as they stepped into the world of law and justice and took part in the prestigious Magistrates' Mock Trial Competition, held at Reading Crown Court. The event offered a unique and inspiring opportunity for students to experience the workings of the legal system first-hand by taking on the roles of legal professionals in a real courtroom setting.
The competition challenged the students to form a legal team, preparing both prosecution and defence cases for a fictional criminal trial. Over the course of several month, the students dedicated their time to researching legal procedures, analysing evidence, writing speeches, and rehearsing their roles as prosecution and defence lawyers, legal advisors, magistrates, defendants, witnesses, and court ushers.
On the day of the trial, the team demonstrated exceptional confidence, professionalism, and teamwork as they presented their case in front of real judges and magistrates. They were commended for their clear arguments, impressive cross-examinations, and their ability to think on their feet under pressure. Additionally, staff at Reading Crown Court commented on how exceptional their presentation and behaviour was – they were true ambassadors for Charters.
One of the highlights of the day was the chance to perform in an actual courtroom, bringing all their hard work to life in an unforgettable way. Not only did the experience deepen their understanding of the justice system, but it also helped build valuable skills such as public speaking, critical thinking, and collaboration.
The competition was a fantastic success and a proud moment for the us. We would like to congratulate all the students involved for their hard work, dedication, and outstanding representation of our school at such a high level.
