British Science Week is in full swing, and this year's theme, "Change & Adapt," set the perfect stage for an entertaining and educational assembly led by the ever-enthusiastic Dr Herbert. Seizing the moment, he even treated students to a rendition of The Big Bang Theory theme song!

With International Women’s Day fresh in his mind, Dr Herbert was joined by a group of female Sixth Form Science students, who helped deliver an engaging session on how species evolve and adapt to their environment. Drawing on Darwin’s discoveries, he captivated students with fascinating facts about sloths - explaining how their long arms, curved feet, and famously slow metabolism are key adaptations to their tree-dwelling lifestyle.

The assembly also highlighted groundbreaking scientific advances, including the discovery of DNA by Watson and Crick, which built on the crucial work of female chemist Rosalind Franklin. Dr Herbert explained how modern science has since harnessed DNA technology to correct genetic faults, cure illnesses, and develop more resilient crops in the face of climate change.

To celebrate British Science Week, students can look forward to a series of hands-on experiments in their lessons, with teachers across the department preparing thrilling practicals to inspire young scientists.

A huge thank you to the Science Department - and, of course, the multi-talented Dr Herbert - for making this week so engaging and memorable for our students!
