Calypso Rhythms fill the Air

All Year 9 students and Year 11 GCSE music students got stuck in to creating some fantastic beats during a steel drumming workshop this week.
On Monday and Tuesday the Year 9 students were working exceptionally hard in the Main Hall playing funky Calypso music from Trinidad and Tobago on the Steel Pans.
The students were taught how to perform as a group on a variety of different instruments, and they did really well creating a brilliant sound that energised our school corridors. Catchy tunes such as "Uptown Funk" and "Hot Hot Hot" were just some of the pieces that they got to perform during the workshop sessions.
This was the final music workshop for our Year 9s after experiencing African Drumming in Year 7 and Samba in Year 8, and it sounded like they really enjoyed themselves.
Head of Music, Mr Hoare said "It is so gratifying to see students embracing the music and cultures from other parts of the world so enthusiastically".
Students in Year 11 also got to experience the power of Calypso in a dedicated class for those taking GCSE Music.
Mr Hoare added “It is important for our students to take part in workshops such as these to understand different musical experiences. For our Year 11 GCSE Music students, the workshop is an integral part of their course allowing them to study Calypso music. Additionally, a class of Year 9 music leaders enjoyed an advanced workshop after school on Monday.”
Our thanks to Inspire-Works for sharing their passion and skills for the Carribean steel pans with our students.
