Year 8 Winter Festivals Assembley
This week Year 8 were treated to a fascinating assembly led by Head of RE, Mrs Grant-Miller all about Winter Festivals with a focus on Christmas and Diwali. The aim was to promote curiosity and unity by igniting students' desire to learn new things.
We looked at common themes in both festivals, showing students that what unites us, is greater than that which divides in the Charters school community.
One of the common themes explored was the purpose and meaning of 'light' in the winter festivals linking to how students themselves can be the light in others' lives. Mrs Grant-Miller shared this inspirational quote from Miep Gies, one of the people who helped hide Anne Frank: 'But even an ordinary secretary or a housewife or a teenager can, within their own small ways, turn on a small light in a dark room.'
Oliver delivered this message during the Year 8 assembly with a creative nod to the iconic doorstep scene from Love Actually, one of the UK’s most beloved Christmas films.
The assembly aimed to promote the social, moral, spiritual and cultural development of our students, giving them the cultural capital they need to function in a diverse world. With music from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker playing, students could reflect on how they can be a 'light' in their own small way.
Thank you to Mrs Grant-Miller for leading this festive assembly.
