National Computing Challenge!

16th Dec 2024

This term our Computing department had been busy with students taking part in The Bebras Challenge, which introduces computational thinking to students worldwide. For two weeks each November over 3 million students take part in the competition from more than 80 countries around the world!

Nine students from Charters took part in the UK Bebras Challenge; six from Key Stage 3, and three from Year 12. The Key Stage 3 students came after school to take part and the Year 12 students were involved as part of their enrichment lesson.

Each student was tasked with completing an online series of questions which encouraged logical thinking and problem-solving linked to maths and computing. The questions were age appropriate for the competitors' year group and were marked automatically by the competition system.

Our students excelled, and Orla from 7A achieved a Gold award. This is a remarkable achievement as there were 133,491 entries in her category and only those in the top 10% were awarded the prestigious Gold prize.

Ernie from 7H and Ben 9G were in the top 25% of their categories nationally too.

Very well done to all the students who took part and our thanks to Miss Coombes for guiding our students through the challenge.
