Memorable Experiences at Jamie’s Farm
Year 10 and Year 11 students from Charters School are currently experiencing a memorable week-long stay at Jamie’s Farm in Monmouth, Wales. This unique opportunity has offered our students the chance to step away from the classroom and immerse themselves in the challenges and rewards of living and working on a functional farm.
The days have been filled with hands-on tasks, starting with feeding the pigs and chickens at the crack of dawn. Moving sheep and cows across the rolling hills of the Welsh countryside tested their teamwork and problem-solving skills, while exercising the farm’s horses was a highlight for many. Whether it has been getting their hands dirty in the fields or ensuring all animals were well-cared for, students are taking pride in their hard work.
Each day also includes long walks through the breathtaking Welsh landscape. Surrounded by serene greenery and stunning views, the students reconnect with nature, enjoying moments of calm and reflection that balanced the physical demands of farm life.
These Jamie’s Farm experiences are not just about learning farm duties, they are about fostering independence, building decision-making skills, and enhancing self-confidence. We are hopeful that our students will carry the lessons learnt and the sense of accomplishment they are gaining at Jamies Farm into both their schoolwork and personal lives, long after returning from this special experience.
Local charity, The Sunninghill Trust, was instrumental in helping this initiative become a reality for our students, after making a large donation to the school. Trustee of the charity, Will Dalton said, "We think this is a fantastic programme which has the potential to make a significant impact."
The trip was a powerful reminder that growth happens outside of one’s comfort zone, and we are incredibly proud of the resilience and determination our students showed throughout their time at Jamie’s Farm.
