Yr 12 ScientistsVisit Royal Institute in London

This week our Year 12 Biology students were offered the amazing opportunity to attend a practical workshop on Bacterial Evolution at the Royal Institution in London. 

The students were able to step into the role of a clinical bacteriologist and use research-grade laboratory equipment. They investigated DNA samples from new outbreaks of bacterial disease using restriction enzyme digests and gel electrophoresis to analyse and learn about DNA.

At the end of the workshop, students looked at the DNA evidence and decided what advice they would give their colleagues at the scene of the hypothetical outbreak.

The workshop involved hands-on practical experience and will enhance the Key Stage 5 curriculum by linking directly to aspects of the A level Biology and Chemistry specification.
