New Books For English
Year 7 English students were thrilled to receive a set of 30 class reading books from MBE Books this week. Head of English, Mrs Boorman, took part in a competition on social media to win the resources and was over the moon to win!
Charters is a school that puts reading at the very heart of the curriculum, and students in Years 7 and 8 take part each day in an initiative called Drop Everything And Read, or D.E.A.R. time. Each day 20 minutes is set aside for the sole purpose of reading, and it is scheduled at a different time each week so that students don't miss the same lessons. It has been developed as an approach to instil a love of reading in our youngest students, so whichever lesson our students find themselves in, the whole of Year 7 and 8 put down their pens, pencils, paintbrushes or netballs and pick up their reading books when it is D.E.A.R. time.
Research suggests that reading for just under half and hour each day is the best way for children to improve their reading ability, and as all GCSE examinations are set at a reading age of 15.7 months, we aim to help all our students achieve this reading level.
Our English department is extremely grateful to MBE Books for supplying such a great resource and our students are looking forward to reading the story.
