Theatre Company Tackle Sexism
This week we welcomed theatre company Narrative Alchemy into Charters, to deliver a play to students in Years 7, 8 and 9 which focused on the topic of sexism and misogyny.
The play looked at three friends and examined times when they had been made to feel uncomfortable, either consciously or unconsciously. It shone a spotlight on one of the friends, who is challenged by the other two about the worrying things he has been saying and posting, and highlighted the impact that his actions were having on those around him.
The play is part of the school's wider initiative to tackle sexism and misogyny and follows the workshop by Peter Radford earlier this year for students in Years 11, 12 and 13.
The 55-minute production covered:
- What is the difference between direct, benevolent and ambivalent sexism?
- What are sexist stereotypes, attitudes and behaviours
- Where do these stereotypes, attitudes and behaviours come from and where can they lead?
- What is the difference between direct, structural and cultural violence?
- What are conscious and unconscious biases, and what is the ‘bystander’ effect?
- How can you respond to and/or report these behaviours, and how can we create lasting change?
- Where to go for help & advice
This content will be followed up next week in our Personal Development Lessons when our theme across the school in Years 7 – 10, 12 & 13 is Sexism and Misogyny. This will cover age appropriate content starting with Healthy and Respectful Relationships at KS3.
