A Level Geography Trip to Iceland
Thirty-one A Level Geographers visited Iceland in half-term on a 4 day tour of amazing scenery, volcanic adventures and tectonic landscapes.
On arrival, students immersed themselves in relaxation at the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa pool; Mr Espensen, Miss Barrett and Miss Walters also indulged in the face masks and spa experience!
The following day students visited the LAVA centre where imposing views of Hekla, Eyjafjallajökull and Katla volcanoes were enjoyed and the science behind the tectonic activity was explored. The group then ventured closer to the volcanoes, seeing first hand the impacts of previous eruptions. Students were in awe of the beautiful waterfalls at Gullfoss and the melting glaciers. The spectacular displays at Geysir, a geothermal area with hot springs, captivated the students as did the gift shop!
Our trip ended with a hike in the newly created lava fields in the Reykjanes Peninsula from the 2021 eruptions; students were keen to experience an earthquake (there were many whilst there but none powerful enough to feel) or an eruption – the teachers were relieved this didn’t happen!
A very memorable experience with an amazing group of students – Iceland you didn’t disappoint.
Student quotes:
‘The Iceland trip was a great once in lifetime experience. I really enjoyed seeing all of the physical landscapes and applying everything we have learnt from geography lessons to each location. I had such a nice time sharing each experience with my teachers and peers which made the experience even more special.’
‘I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing the natural beauty of Iceland and it was amazing to apply the geography we learn in class to the landmarks we visited. The teachers helped to make the experience worthwhile for everyone.’
