Pride Society Students Lead on Assemblies
Last week the school's Pride Society lead on assemblies each morning to raise awareness about the LGBTQ+ community. The assemblies were delivered by two Year 8 students Amelia (they/them) and Shushana (she/her) with the help of a Sixth Form leader who designed a powerpoint, which can be viewed here.
The students explained some key definitions such as biological sex, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity as these can be confusing. For example, someone’s sex and their gender aren’t necessarily aligned – gender is personal, not assigned by external sources.
It was encouraged that all students and staff wear and respect a pronoun pin, even if it may seem ‘obvious’, because this supports and shows solidarity for students and staff whose pronouns are less obvious or untraditional.
One slide from the presentation entitled 'If I could tell you one thing..’ was made by asking members of the Pride Soc what messages they would like the whole school to know. Their responses can be seen below.
The students identified key LGBTQ+ figures and how the LGBTQ+ community is represented in different cultures - this showed that LGBTQ+ individuals and experiences have been present worldwide throughout history and isn’t a new ‘fad’.
It was interesting to hear the points that Amelia and Shushana raised and how they delivered these in such an articulate and thought provoking away. We thank them very much for sharing this insight with us to help our school be an inclusive and welcoming place for all.
