Future Females in Tech Event
This week, Mr Greaves, Mrs Ghattaura - and our school mascot, Waddleton - accompanied a group of Year 10 girls to the Females in Tech Event which was organised by Deutsche Bank. Not only did the trip give the girls a wonderful insight into careers within STEM, it also allowed them to mix with other female students from schools around the country. The two key pieces of advice that were shared with the students were that they should be keen to learn and willing to work.
Report by Year 10 student, Katie
"On Thursday, 11th of May, five girls from the Robotics Team in Year 10 were invited to the U.K. HQ of Deutsche Bank in London to participate in the Future Females in Tech Event. It gave us an opportunity to network, learn about jobs/ career paths in tech, and build on our teamwork skills.
In designated groups mixed up with the other attendees who we were meeting for the first time, the other sponsor, Red Hat, a software company which is a subsidiary of IBM (International Business Machines) set the main task that involved collaboration and creativity. Through building Lego, the groups had to design and make prominent aspects of a city (for example we created police stations, pubs, airports etc) using agile product management techniques. After four rounds of making these city areas - which were considered to be masterpieces - awards were given to the teams that demonstrated the best collective attributes.
Additionally, there were chances to hear and ask questions from experienced professionals, who work in the industry. The 50 young females present from schools across the country were also able to learn about possible future work experiences, apprenticeships, and even industrial placements. Overall, we found the day incredibly useful, regarding our future aspirations, and inspiring, to be surrounded by other females with a passion for technology."
We hope that the trip inspired the girls to research for themselves some of the rewarding roles available within the STEM job market and look forward to hearing about their aspirations as they progress through our school.
