Students Enjoy Skiing Trip
During the first week of the Easter break, 51 students enjoyed a week on the slopes in the beautiful Italian village of Sestriere.
Despite a lengthy delay at Dover on the outward bound journey, the behaviour of all students throughout the week was exemplary and the Year 9 and 10 students were fantastic ambassadors for our school, with the coach drivers, ski instructors and hotel staff all commenting on their impeccable manners and attitude.
The students spent five hours each day in lessons and enjoyed a hot meal on the slopes before their afternoon session - we even celebrated a birthday during one of our lunchbreaks with a Colin the Caterpillar that had been brought from England.
There was a real range of abilities on the trip and by the end of the week all students had improved their technique. The beginners progressed from the 'magic carpet' to button and chairlifts, and by the end of the week they were all able to successfully navigate their way down a red run and even took part in a race!
There were many highlights on the trip, including the daily room inspections which were great fun. The students created more and more elaborate ways to secure the highest marks from the staff members who were awarding the daily points; towel art, background music, air freshener and bribes of complimentary sweets were all used to curry favour with staff members!
During the meal each evening students were invited to nominate someone for the 'Silly Skier' award. Nominations ranged from someone who had wiped out their entire ski group when they couldn't stop to a teacher who managed to fall off of a chairlift! The person with the most nominations wore a bright yellow waistcoat and hat for the remainder of the evening and the next day on the slopes.
It really was a wonderful trip with students learning a range of new skills and making lots of new friends.
