Student to Represent UK at The International Space Settlement Design Competition
Report by Year 12 student, Libby
The International Space Settlement Design Competition is a 5 day long competition where teams of 14-18 year old students from around the world are asked to design a possible futuristic fictional space settlement.
Competitors include groups from Australia, Africa, India and North America to list a few and the competition takes place at NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. The UK team was selected from students at the national UK Space Design Competition that was held at Imperial Collage London this March and I am thrilled to be one of the 12 chosen students to represent the UK in the summer.
At nationals, our team of 60 won so 6 members from our group were selected to be part of the international team, the other 6 members being 2 people from each of the teams
that did not win. This year the competition will be taking place from the 26th to 30th July and we will be in Florida for a couple of days after this so we have the opportunity to look around Kennedy.
Talking to some students who have been to the international competition before, there appears to be more teaching based days towards the start and then we will be left as a team to come up with our proposal that will be presented to a panel of professionals in the industry. I am not fully sure what the competition will entail, but I look forward to finding out in the summer!
