Careers Talk For Year 10 Students
We were delighted to welcome a guest speaker today who spoke with students in Year 10 about his career.
Ty joined The Army at 16 and became a member of The Corps of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME). This section of the British Army provides engineering support to maintain and repair the vast array of equipment, including helicopters, which became Ty's speciality during his 13 years with the organisation.
He spoke about the postings he had taken part in - from Northern Ireland and Hong Kong to Brunei and Bosnia - and the qualifications and skills he gathered during this time. When he decided to leave The Army, Ty took part in a 'resettlement course' which highlighted the transferable skills he could use in civilian life.
Ty is now a licensed aircraft engineer and works for an American finance company. He explained to the students that there is huge scope within the aviation industry for apprenticeships and that airlines are always looking for talented people.
He summed up his careers talk by sharing a piece of advice; he told the students to get a good foundation of qualifications at school and that they shouldn't be daunted by CV writing. "It's all about you," he told them.
