Students of Spanish in Years 12 and 13 gained insights into Mexican history, culture and cuisine at an event hosted by Sunninghill Library this week.

The free exhibition included a talk, in Spanish, by Mr Ian Jacobs a local Mexico expert, whose work has been published by Cambridge University Press.

Mr Jacobs guided students through exhibits relating to Mexico’s ancient cities, the calendars of its indigenous peoples and the history of Mexican cuisine.

He spoke to the students primarily in Spanish, providing them with an excellent opportunity to hone their language skills and learn from an expert.

The students’ visit was organised by Mr Wightman, Head of Spanish at Charters, who said: “Many thanks to Sunninghill Library and Mr Jacobs for offering our students great insight into the rich history of Mexico and its people.

They gained some very useful background knowledge for their studies of the Mexican novel Como Agua Para Chocolate, by Laura Esquivel, as well as benefiting from the opportunity to interact in the Spanish language.”

The free exhibition runs until Saturday 18 March, during library opening hours.
