Poems Shortlisted for National Competition
Mrs Phipps recently submitted students' entries to 'The Lost Words' National Poetry Day Competition, and the judges were so impressed with the quality of the writing that two of our school's entries have been shortlisted.
The competition, which invited children to write an acrostic poem about their favourite plant or animal, will now be judged by The Lost Words author, Robert Macfarlane, for prize consideration.
We posted a Tweet about Anna & Charlotte's achievement, and were over the moon to receive this wonderful reply from the author himself, who informed us that the girls really should be proud of themselves as it seems they were shortlisted from a very large group.
Read the quality of Anna & Charlotte's writing below. They are both extremely talented students and we are looking forward to hearing how they get on in the final part of the competition.
I was really excited when I saw this competition advertised on Twitter as it combines two of my great loves (the natural world and poetry) and was a fantastic opportunity for our Year 7 students to think creatively about the world in which we live and engage with English in a unique way. Robert MacFarlane is one of my favourite authors (I highly recommend Landmarks and The Old Ways) and this also attracted my attention. Poetry is very important to me as I believe it is such a powerful form: it allows us to explore and express our emotions and to experience the incredible beauty of the English language.
Anyone and everyone can be a poet – come along to Poetry Club on Thursdays (Week B) at second break in M12 and find out!"
