Japan Society Trip
Review of the trip by Year 12 student Peter
The Japan Society Sixth Form Day at University of Birkbeck, London was excellent. It was informative, engaging and immensely interesting.
We started the day with a talk on how Japan is one of the leading countries in virtual reality technology and went on to show how we could begin to incorporate smell and taste into the virtual world. After this the workshops began, and I went off to the shodo (Japanese calligraphy) class ,where you weren’t allowed to use pens and instead had to use paintbrushes.
Later in the morning there was another presentation: this time about Japanese students and how you could study the Japanese language and culture at University. At lunch we went to a shogi (Japanese chess) game where I proceeded to beat Aryan and watch Arjan forfeit to one of the pros.
It was then time for our own hands-on VR experience to round off the trip and a final lecture on Japanese as an option at University and the benefits of studying/living abroad.
Other students also enjoyed workshops on origami, manga, and language. Overall the trip was a great day out, and well worth the journey.
