Inclusivity Week
Inclusion is a mindset.
Inclusion is a sense of belonging.
Inclusion is embracing the fact that everyone has value to add.
This week we have been celebrating Inclusivity Week with a series of events. From themed food each day from around the globe in our Dining Hall and TED Talks in our Lecture Theatre at second breaks, to guest speakers and musical celebrations in the sunshine.
Year 7 students began their week with an assembly which coincided with World Poetry Day. Mr Rodgers, their Head of Year and Teacher of English, shared Erin Hanson's beautiful poem, Not, with his year group, which seemed the perfect choice to celebrate both poetry and Inclusivity Week.
On Tuesday we welcomed two guest speakers to Charters. Lorna McArdle, from LGBTQ+ service SupportU spoke with students from Years 10, 12 & 13 to raise awareness around the impact of homophobic, biphobic & transphobic bullying. The students were shown the film below which looks at what gender identity means to today's teens.
Students were encouraged to ask questions after the presentation and were reminded that should they need help or advice, they are able to speak with their Tutors, Head of Year or email our worried@ email address to begin a conversation.
Students in Years 7, 8 & 9 welcomed former professional footballer Leon Braithwaite, who presented a Show Racism The Red Card session. Leon spoke about discrimination, racism and diversity and how we can all be a little more aware of our actions and mindful of not stereotyping individuals.
Charters Inclusivity Week, which was devised and planned in response to the Pulse Surveys, has been extremely sucessful and it has been wonderful to see our students demonstrating their differences in line with our ethos of Unity throughout the entire school.
