HIGHLIGHTS
The assemblies this week celebrated the life of Queen Elizabeth II, highlighting her as a person as well as the role she fulfilled. Each assembly ended with a member of the Sixth Form Student Leadership Team reading Floral Tribute by Simon Armitage, The Poet Laureate. A copy of his poem can be found here
Earlier in the week, the Year 10 & 11 Tennis group played a Davis Cup style match against Radley College, winning the final doubles match to progress to the next round of the regional competition. Very well done indeed to the team and good luck in the next round.
INFORMATION EVENINGS
We have now completed all the Information Evenings for the year groups, culminating in the Year 7 evening last night . These evenings are designed to give you as much information as possible about your son/daughter’s school year. If you missed the evening that relates to your child, the presentations are on the school website. Thank you to all the parents who have attended the online or face to face presentations.
Please click here to view information from the evenings.
FIRE DRILL AND LOCKDOWN
This week we carried out these two drills, which form an important part of our safeguarding systems in school. Both drills went very well and we are pleased with the way that students responded, we will feedback to the students how the drills went. It is fundamental that our students understand the importance of the procedures as it is about their safety in exceptional circumstances.
RECENT RESEARCH ON MOBILE PHONE USE
There is a growing evidence from academic research that excessive mobile phone use is impacting on young people in a negative way. The research is summarised here and offers some advice to parents as well when trying to established routines.
READING
Not only is reading a great way to unwind and relax, it helps with an individual's wellbeing as it allows our brain to slow down and perhaps spark our imagination. It is also very important for future success, for example most GCSE papers are set with a reading age of 15 years and 7 months to be able to access what is being asked effectively.
Research shows that reading between 15 to 24 minutes has a positive impact on an individual's literacy development as well as supporting their wellbeing. This is for any age group.
If you can, please do encourage your children to read at home and even discuss with them books you have read or the books they are reading. It really can help.

SPORTS PRESENTATION EVENING
Sponsored by Berks County FC
Invitations have now been sent to those students in KS3 and KS4 who are invited to Sports Presentation Evening next Wednesday 28 September. We look forward to celebrating the sporting achievements of our students.
Please remember that attendance is by invitation only. Thank you.
WATER BOTTLES
Please could we ask parents/carers to ensure that all students are attending school with a refillable water bottle? The benefits of staying hydrated to help concentration are well documented but we would also like to students to have their own bottle that they can fill up before school and in their break times. We have had some students asking for a cup of water, sometimes during lesson times, and we are committed to support students having their own bottle in order to maximise learning time.
