THIS WEEK
HIGHLIGHTS...
Seeing Year 11 in their final assembly on Wednesday was a joy. This final assembly in Year 11 is always a milestone for the students and it was wonderful to see them all there after a period of shirt-signing and cake-eating in the Sixth Form Common Room. Mr Hancock did a great job planning the assembly and helped them to reminisce with the aid of a video of staff dancing to Louis Theroux's rap and some memories from Year 7 to 11.
It was lovely to see our Year 12 students taking part in a Post-18 Pathways information session today. For further details on Post-18 Pathways information, please click here.
The school Library has been a focal point in the build up to the celebrations to mark the Jubilee. To celebrate the contribution the Commonwealth has made to our society, there has been a display of books set in different Commonwealth countries, allowing students the opportunity to familiarise themselves with how different the countries, customs and cultures are in the many member states.
We have also added the finishing touches to the canopy for use by the Sixth Form which is outside their Common Room. The trees that have been donated as part of the Queens canopy project have now also been planted completing the landscaping of the area. Over time this will develop into a relaxing space for our Sixth Form students to use all year around. This completes the project to create outdoor spaces for students to be able to relax in as well as play. Having good social spaces available in school in all weathers is very important.
LEGACY FUND
We have launched a new initiative for families who wish to mark the end of their child’s time at Charters and have set up a Legacy Fund for those who wish to make a contribution. The names of all donors will feature on our Legacy Wall in the Main Hall and this year’s donations will help fund the project to upgrade our stage-lighting. Thank you to all those who have already donated to this fund. Should you wish to make a donation please follow this link which will take you to our secure online CAF Donation page.
We are mindful that the whole of the UK is experiencing a rise in the cost of living and are aware that this will have an impact on many of our families. With this is mind we would like to encourage the donation of any unwanted text books after the exams. These can be left in the box in our Main Reception and will then be reallocated to any new student who is unable to purchase the resources for themselves.
As we said goodbye to our Year 11 students this week we would like to wish them every success and happiness for their future.
TESTING
This half term has seen the school take a further step to normality with exams starting and restrictions around COVID isolation reducing again. There is now no need to test unless asked to do so by a health care professional. This will certainly help us to start to return to normal in respects of absences from school. We are reviewing our processes against new government guidance ready for September 2022.
EXTRA CURRICULAR
Over the next half-term we have a number of residential trips taking place as we continue to get back up to speed with our extra-curricular and curriculum trip programme. Thank you to all staff giving up their time to ensure that the residential trips can take place.
SUMMER CHAMBER CONCERT
On Wednesday, students from the Music Department performed in the Summer Chamber Concert. Every year group was represented, and the repertoire was incredibly varied, with everything ranging from David Bowie to Bruch. The quality of the performances was exemplary and many audience members praised the students' musicianship. There will be another series of Chamber Concerts next year, if students are interested in performing, they should contact Mr Hoare.
PIXL EDGE
It’s been another busy half-term with everything Pixl Edge related. The Edge student ambassadors have been working hard with younger students and speaking in assemblies to promote the programme. Congratulations to all the students who have achieved an accreditation at Apprentice, Pioneer or Graduate level.
There are a further four students who are preparing hard for the coveted Masters level qualification. To achieve the Masters award these Sixth Form students will be delivering an hour long presentation to business leaders and senior teachers about the activities they have undertaken over the year. We wish them well for their ‘VIVA’ in July.
As mentioned in a previous update, students can also now undertake the ‘Green Edge’ which is a separate Edge qualification which has a particular focus on the Environment and issues surround Climate Change. We are delighted that so many students have shown such initiative and are also undertaking many of these activities which are on the Edge platform.
