THIS WEEK
HIGHLIGHTS...
I had the pleasure this week to present Year 9 students with their certificates for their level 1 FPQ project. It was wonderful to personally hand over the certificates to the students who are part of Potential High Achievers programme for completing their individual research projects. They have all worked very hard indeed for the excellent results they gained form the exam board.
I received an email from the editor of Boxing Weekly about one of our students who has been interviewing boxers and posting them online. He wanted me to pass on how good they were and for him to keep practising. Such a lovely email to have received.
DUKE OF EDINBURGH
I would like to thank all the staff who have, and still are giving up their weekends to support the award programme. Without those staff who are willing to give up time with their own families, then we could not run the awards that allow so many individuals to have the fantastic experience that the programme brings.
Good luck to all the students who are taking part, in particular the students embarking on their Gold expedition.
PARENT FEEDBACK
Thank you for all the feedback from the questionnaires. We will be addressing some of the common themes that have come up. I am pleased to say that 90% of parents who responded would recommend Charters to another family. We would clearly like that to be higher but is is a good starting point for us to build on.
Some parents mentioned extra-curricular activities as an area in need of development, in particular when they are cancelled at short notice. We run a high number of ECAs across the school and as such when we have a clash of fixtures, we have to cancel some ECAs to facilitate this. We are also looking at how we can extend the range for next year. It is always a difficult balance for staff to provide the extra-curricular opportunities while taking into account their work life balance and other aspects of school life.
We try to ensure that we have as many ‘free’ activities as we can but sometimes we have to charge as they are provided by external providers.
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS
All Year 9 students will be ‘off timetable’ on Friday 1 July as we will be hosting a Handling the News Day with the entire year group.
Students will be placed in news groups – The Times, The Sun, The Independent etc. and assigned roles such as editor or reporter. During the day, the news groups will be fed a series of news stories and it is up to them to send a reporter and/or photographer to the specified location around school where a ‘press release’ about the story will take place. The students will listen to the press release and then have the opportunity to ask questions. They then decide what stories they will use and how they will write up the story.
We need guests who can provide the news stories. We will write a story for you to deliver and this can link to your field of expertise or business. We would require volunteers for up to 30 minutes during the morning of 1 July.
If you are interested in helping us to deliver this innovative cross-curricular learning experience, please contact our Marketing Manager r.herbert@chartersschool.org.uk to discuss how you could be involved.
Thank you
BERKSHIRE COUNTY CUP FINAL
The U14 Football team performed exceptionally well to reach the final of the Berkshire County Cup final earlier this week. Although they lost 2-0 they played well but unfortunately could not overcome a strong Forest School team.
We will go again next year!
Very well done to all the boys who played in the U14 team throughout this season, they should all feel very proud.
CAN YOU HELP?
If you are able to offer a work experience placement for one of our Year 12 students, we would love to hear from you.
The placement would last for 5 days
- 27 June to 1 July
- No training needed
If you feel that you could accommodate a student in your company, please email c.tuohyfowler@chartersschool.org.uk
Thank you
THE CHARTERS CHRONICLE
Check out the Spring edition of The Charters Chronicle, our student-led newspaper which highlights the broad range of activities and events that make our school so special.
The news team was created as part of the Enrichment opportunities for our Sixth Form students and the publication is produced each term.
BEST FACTUAL FILM
We were so proud to hear that one of our alumni, Cameron Tait, has won the Best Factual Film category at the prestigious Royal Television Society Student Awards. His film, ‘On Board DH23’, is a documentary about life as a fisherman and was part of his final project for the BA (Hons) Television Production degree at Solent University, Southampton.
