THIS WEEK
HIGHLIGHTS...
Year 13's last day today and the May Ball last week. Two wonderful occasions to see Year 13 having such a lovely time celebrating there time at Charters. It was fantastic to see them all at the May Ball looking very smart and dancing the night away. The last day saw the traditional return to them wearing school uniform, it was great to see the students who had joined us from other schools also wearing their old school uniform.
Wishing you all the very best for the future.
PUBLIC EXAMINATIONS
With so many students taking exams, we ask that you remind your sons/daughters to be mindful of the spaces we are using for exams which will give the students taking their GCSEs and A levels the best possible conditions.
YEAR 11 & 13
We wish you all the best as you start your public exams over the next week. You have worked hard for them, try to relax and not panic - you have prepared well so believe in what you can do.
Head of Year 13, Miss Coombes said "Today we said good bye to our Year 13 students. They have been a lovely year group and it was so nice to be able to celebrate with them all together in their final assembly, looking back at their time at Charters School since Year 7. They have had an excellent last week and have been great company. We wish them the very best in their upcoming exams – they are working very hard and can look forward to some good results this summer."
TOILETS
We have a rolling programme of toilet refurbishment that has been underway for three years. At present the Year 9 toilets are being refurbished with floor to ceiling cubicles and the doors from the corridors removed, as we have done on other sets of toilets. We encourage our students to respect all spaces in school and this includes toilets. It is very discouraging to see that some of these spaces have been treated badly. A lot of effort has been spent on this programme to make the environment in the toilets as best as it can be.
VAPE
We are aware that nationally an increasing number of young people are vaping. Vapes of any kind are banned from the school, students have been informed of this. Any student caught vaping in school or with a vape in school will be subject to the schools Behaviour Policy.

MOBILE PHONE POLICY
We would once again like to remind parents of the schools mobile phone policy. We have a gate to gate policy with mobile phones being switched off and in BAGS not in blazer pockets or trouser pockets. The reason for this is that students may forget to turn off their phone and it will vibrate in their pockets distracting them.
In addition when it comes to external examination a phone on the person on or off can lead to disqualification from qualification, as such this is about getting students used to not having their phones in their pockets when in school.
LEGACY FUND
We have launched a new initiative for families who wish to mark the end of their child’s time at Charters and have set up a Legacy Fund for those who wish to make a contribution. The names of all donors will feature on our Legacy Wall in the Main Hall and this year’s donations will help fund the project to upgrade our stage-lighting. Thank you to all those who have already donated to this fund. Should you wish to make a donation please follow this link which will take you to our secure online CAF Donation page.
We are mindful that the whole of the UK is experiencing a rise in the cost of living and are aware that this will have an impact on many of our families. With this is mind we would like to encourage the donation of any unwanted text books after the exams. These can be left in the box in our Main Reception and will then be reallocated to any new student who is unable to purchase the resources for themselves.
As we say goodbye to our Year 13 students today we would like to wish them every success and happiness for their future.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK 2022
This week Charters have been supporting Mental Health Awareness Week, which is a national campaign. Throughout the year we talk to the students about their mental health, celebrating Hello Yellow in October and Children’s Mental Health Week in February. It is important that students know how to talk about their wellbeing and how to look after it.
This year the theme is ‘Loneliness’. We have decided to focus on making connections with the people around us. Assemblies this week have seen Mrs Zell introducing students to the people who are there to support them in school from our Safeguarding Officer to our ELSA staff and the School Counsellor. During tutor time, students will have an opportunity to engage with resources designed to promote discussion about loneliness and how to make connections with yourself and others.
Following on from this week, we will be sending out an anonymous survey to students, giving them the opportunity to tell us how their mental health is and what is having the greatest impact on how they feel. We hope to keep the conversation going about mental health so that we can respond to our young peoples’ concerns.
This Loneliness Guide is a helpful resource for parents and carers. It explores ideas about loneliness in more detail and provides lots of useful strategies for managing those feelings.
DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARDS
Well done to the students who have completed their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Completion of these awards shows a high level of persistence, and the students should be proud of their achievements. I know quite a few of those having finished Bronze are working hard on their Silver Award. They received their certificates in assembly this week.
If your child has not finished their award and requires some help, please ask them to email Mr Taylor - DofE Coordinator c.taylor@chartersschool.org.uk and he will work through any outstanding sections with them.

POLICE SURVEY
The Police will be outside school next week in the morning carrying out a survey if students wish to engage in it. They are collating information regarding perception of knife crime in local area amongst young people.
HAVE ANOTHER DRINK
Please send your child in with a refillable water bottle. We have water dispensers around the school they can use but they will need a refillable bottle.
Apart from feeling thirsty, low levels of fluid in the body can cause headaches, feelings of dizziness, lethargy and poor concentration.
Please provide water bottles and remind your child of the importance of drinking plenty of water during the day particularly as we start to enjoy warmer weather.
