Japan Club Takes Magical Trip to See My Neighbour Totoro in London

On a glorious summer’s evening filled with sunshine and excitement, students from all year groups boarded a train to London for a truly unforgettable experience with the Japan Club. The destination? The Gillian Lynne Theatre near Covent Garden, where they had the chance to see the enchanting stage adaptation of My Neighbour Totoro, a story that has captured hearts for generations.
The trip marked another milestone for the Japan Club, which has gone from strength to strength, especially following last year's successful trip to Japan. With growing interest and enthusiasm amongst students, this vibrant extra-curricular activity (ECA) continues to celebrate the beauty of Japanese culture - through film, language, food, and now, theatre.
Upon arrival in the capital, the group made their way through the bustling streets to the iconic West End venue. There was a buzz of anticipation as they took their seats in the majestic auditorium, ready to be transported to a whimsical world of forest spirits, soot sprites, and childhood wonder.
The play itself did not disappoint. With dazzling puppetry, captivating music composed by Joe Hisaishi, and stunning stage design, the performance brought Studio Ghibli’s beloved 1988 animated film to life in spectacular fashion. Students were visibly moved by the gentle story of two sisters navigating a new home, family illness, and the mysterious creatures that inhabit the countryside around them. For many, it was their first time seeing a theatrical production of this scale - and it left a lasting impression.
"It was absolutely magical," said one Year 9 student. "I’ve always loved the film, but seeing it live with all the music and puppetry was just incredible."
The outing not only offered a cultural experience but also strengthened the bond between students across different year groups, united by their shared love of Japan and its rich storytelling traditions.
With more trips and activities on the horizon, including language workshops, anime screenings, and Japanese cooking sessions, the Japan Club continues to flourish as a hub of curiosity, creativity, and connection.
If this trip was anything to go by, the spirit of Totoro is well and truly alive - and so is the spirit of adventure within the Japan Club! Our thanks to Mrs King, Mr McNamarra and Miss Joel for accompanying the students on this fantastic trip.
